The Power of Purpose

In recent years the idea of businesses as positive social change agents has gained much traction. Companies have underlined their agendas with a mission to improve the world and CEO’s have increasingly weighed in on topics external to their business.

Today, the COVID-19 outbreak is having an unprecedented impact on individuals, communities, the global economy and healthcare systems. As well, it has disrupted global supply chains that we did not realize were so fragile. As the world is faced with a situation that we had not planned for and threatens the world as we know it, there is no more opportune or crucial time for businesses and leaders to stand by their values.  

Government officials around the globe are taking major steps to protect us, and healthcare workers and first responders on the front-line are putting themselves at risk every day. Businesses and their leaders hold another key component of the solution, which is equally important. It has been incredibly encouraging to see companies respond to the global crisis with efforts that put people before profits. Combining public-private sector efforts through shared goals and collaborations will amplify the power we have to fight our new, common enemy. 

Technology companies are in an especially unique position to be a part of the solution. In fact, it is our responsibility and our purpose. BlackBerry is proud to do our part in contributing to the solution.

Social distancing is critical to containing the spread of COVID-19, yet it can put massive pressure on individuals, both financially and mentally. The recent growth of the technology industry has been based on advances in connectivity software. These technologies must now be utilized to enable people to securely work from home, to stay connected with our loved ones, and to keep our minds healthy. 

The past few weeks have demonstrated that we are truly one global community. As we fight this fight together, I am thankful to everyone who is contributing to the solution and grateful to be able to play a part as a technology business leader. The benefits of technology are vast, let’s demonstrate the nature of that value now.
