1. Streamlining VGF for Efficient Deployment

The recent efforts by the power ministry to streamline?Viability Gap Funding (VGF)?for battery energy storage projects are commendable. Simplifying the funding process will accelerate the deployment of clean energy solutions, paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure nationwide.

With an initial outlay of ?9,400 crore, including budgetary support of ?3,760 crore. Three facts of the approved scheme:

• Through VGF support, the scheme targets a Levelized Cost of Storage (LCoS) of ?5.50-6.60 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), thus making stored renewable energy a viable option for managing peak power demand.
• The VGF shall be disbursed in five tranches linked with the various stages of implementation of BESS projects.
• To ensure that the benefits of the scheme reach the consumers, a minimum of 85 percent of the BESS project capacity will be made available to distribution companies or discoms.

2. Plain Vanilla Solar to Standalone BESS and Dispatchable Renewables

There is a clear shift in terms of the requirements from renewable energy plants?going forward to be more predictable rather than intermittent in nature. With the success of New FDRE and Standalone BESS projects, we foresee this format of projects to become the norm going into the future.?This strategic pivot signals a new era of innovation and growth in the energy sector driven largely by low-cost battery-based energy storage and optimisation software.
