The Power of Public Speaking for Consultants: Building Your Business and Credibility
In the dynamic realm of consultancy and coaching, public speaking is one of the most sought after skills. It's not just about confidently addressing a crowd; it's about seizing an opportunity to showcase your passion, expanding your network, and attracting your next significant client. As a strong public speaker, you can unlock valuable opportunities to connect with your audience more effectively and propel your business forward.
Connecting Passion with Expertise
Public speaking allows consultants to blend their deep knowledge on a given topic with their enthusiasm for it. But sometimes, people may ask you to speak on something that you may not believe in or that does not align with your work. It's important to refuse the invitation. If you're not passionate about it, the audience will know right away and tune out. Stick to what you know and what you love.
Whether addressing a PTA group at your children's school or a massive conference for work, your ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and persuasively can leave a lasting impression. Sharpen your public speaking to demonstrate better why you're an authority in your field, establishing credibility beyond what any CV can convey.
Making Meaningful Connections
Public speaking is not just about delivering a message; it's about building relationships. Often times, conversations you have before or after your presentation are as important as your speech itself. Arrive at the venue early, make a point to speak to 3-5 people before the program begins and, whenever possible, learn as much as you can about them without letting the conversation focus on you.?After your presentation, show appreciation for positive feedback and look for opportunities to follow up for deeper conversations later. Your next big client could be in the audience. Public speaking magnifies your reach, putting you in front of decision-makers and influencers seeking solutions. Each presentation is an opportunity not only to educate but also to network and build relationships that could shape the future of your business. Remember, every person in every audience is a human being worth knowing, a potential partner, and a potential advocate for your future success.
Craft Compelling Presentations
To make the most impact, focus on quality over quantity in your presentations. Resist the urge to overwhelm your audience with information. Instead, distill your message to the two or three key insights you want them to remember. Then, supplement these points with compelling anecdotes—stories stick with people far longer than statistics or bullet points.
Harnessing Your Presence
Effective speaking isn't just about what you say but how you say it. Every word should have a purpose. Many speakers don’t realize they use filler words like "um", "you know", “right” or “like”.? Even great speakers often make the mistake of using “and” too much, creating run-on sentences that go on forever and weaken the impact of their message.?

Guess what? Choreography isn't just for pop stars. Your body language communicates confidence and expertise also. Plan your movements with meaning, including gestures and using space on the stage to demonstrate your message, call out important figures, or transition topics. Movement without purpose looks like nervousness.
If you struggle with nervousness, and who doesn’t, practice deep breathing exercises to calm your nerves and project confidence. As you speak, observe your audience for cues—focus on eye contact with attendees leaning in with interest rather than those distracted by their phones or with furrowed brows.
Authenticity and Impact
When it comes to public speaking, your authenticity is your superpower. Be true to yourself and your values, and witness how your audience connects with you on a deeper level. Audiences can sense genuineness, and it builds trust—a crucial component in your desire to serve them through your business.

Ron, your post reminded me of one ne of the most insightful lessons I learned when I first started my consulting and training business. That lesson was that professional speakers deliver value and are usually compensated versus public speakers expect something in return, such as resources donated. Both can add to one's credibility and business but in very different ways.
