Since ancient times, quality nourishment has been vital for maintaining health, embodying the adage "prevention is better than cure." Among the renowned healthy diets, the Mediterranean Diet (MD) stands out, rich in valuable macro- and micronutrients. Adherence to the MD is associated with reduced inflammation and lower rates of chronic diseases.
Numerous studies have examined the MD's role in reducing inflammation, disease rates, and mortality. This diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, olive oil, and limited meat consumption, showing positive effects on cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, and obstructive sleep apnea. The MD's benefits have been known for nearly 50 years, initially observed in Mediterranean populations' reduced cardiovascular risks.
Recent research highlights the gut microbiome's significant role in human health and its connection to the MD. Studies indicate that people following the MD experience less inflammation, emphasizing food quality over quantity. Even the elderly benefit from the diet, showing improvements in metabolism and inflammation.
In a study by Bonaccio M et al., involving 14,586 healthy subjects, MD adherence inversely correlated with White Blood Count and platelets counts. Mena M. et al. found the MD inhibits PBMCs' recruitment and adhesion to the endothelium, showcasing a molecular anti-inflammatory effect.
