Summary
This lecture will explore how power and politics as social-structural determinants influence health equity.
The social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age, and they also include the health system. These circumstances are shaped by the global, national, and local distribution of money, power, and resources and are influenced by policy choices.
However, in the public health discourse, more attention should be paid to the role of power and politics in health equity outcomes. Power and politics influence the distribution of resources, opportunities, and privileges within a society.? With data and evidence, this lecture will explore how power and political dynamics influence health equity in four pathways.
?a) interpersonal level, b) health care professionals and patients’ level, c) state and subjects’ level, and d) global health institutions and sovereign states and state subjects’ level influence on health equity.
