Power of the Pocket

The pocket, the humble pouch that is sewn onto nearly all items, is not as simple as it seems, you see, it holds things. The most common thing it holds today is a simple little computer called the mobile or cell phone.
Our lives revolve around them, we check our messages, send quirky tweets and update our statuses everywhere, snap photo's and Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr and the list goes on.
You left the house without your phone, OMG, full on panic mode, no matter how far you are away from your house, you WILL return to retrieve it. The fear of not being connected is that great that real anxiety is generated when you can not access the Internet and your online life.
Oh and when we hear that notification tone, we jump to our phone to see who loves us, who wants to talk to us. That simple validation that activates our pleasure centres and bathes us in the warm knowledge that we are accepted.
So since we have such a powerful device, why are not more businesses taking advantage of the power that people have put in their pockets? Business spends thousands and thousands on 'offline' advertising such as papers, flyers, television and radio adverts that we all know don't work as they used to, but yet they persist in pursuing them.
Those papers and flyers we all get in the post are hardly ever read and soon forgotten if ever opened and just head straight to the recycling bin.
The industry calls it 'Ad Blindness' which is quite true considering that not many people can recall an advert they just saw on Television just prior to the favourite show returning.
Flyers, street adverts, paper and all other means is just clutter, clutter to be ignored, yet one technology from the 90's will instantly get attention and yet this technology is not being used.
What is this cool tech?
The humble, 90's invented SMS (Short Message Service) message. The old bastion from the 90's will get instant attention from anyone who receives one. SMS is more powerful than the facebook and other social media notifications that are now also 'blending' into the blindness of the background. Who cares if so and so gained a level in Candy Crush?
However, receive and an SMS and boom, instant attention and phone grabbing keenness to open the SMS. Why, because of its personal and powerful attraction to instant notification of a more important message.
An SMS rises above all the digital clutter.
Business is very very slowly embracing the SMS culture by providing relevant notifications and reminders about appointments and upcoming bills and events.
However, so much more can be done. Humanising the message can create a relationship between the business and customer in a way never seen before.
Humanising is using natural language to interact with someone.
It is creating a clear conversation using names and natural language to convey your message. It's not the 'Blast and forget' SMS messages that you see today. It is the natural type of conversation that you would have with your friends.
The technology exists today that allows a business to drill down to what exactly the customer wants and address that need in a conversational two-way exchange of messages. It allows direct satisfaction of the customers need and puts more money in the businesses pocket.
Best part, it is all hands off and on auto-pilot for the business owner, just set and forget, building relationships and cementing loyalty and putting money in your pocket, by using the object that is in everyone's pocket!
