The Power of Playing to Our Strengths: Sameer's Journey of Self-Discovery and Growth
Navigating leadership challenges in a dynamic corporate environment requires continuous growth and adaptability. Today, I want to share a story about Sameer, a seasoned leader who encountered unexpected professional hurdles. His journey offers valuable insights into the importance of flexibility, feedback, and mentorship. Through coaching and self-reflection, Sameer discovered ways to stay engaged and succeed in his leadership role.
Meet Sameer: The Rising Star
Sameer was one of the brightest leaders in our company. He quickly climbed the ladder, receiving recognition and leadership roles ahead of his peers. Everyone in the organization admired Sameer for his career path, impressive work, and the recognition he earned. Senior leaders supported his growth, believing in his potential. The young recruit had grown into a key talent for the organization.
But then, things changed.
The Challenge and Frustration
Recently, Sameer started struggling. The new Chief of the organization didn’t see Sameer’s work as highly as others did in the past. Sameer was set in his ways, not willing to change his style or try new approaches. His team found him rigid and bossy. Those who knew him from his earlier days saw a big change: Sameer had become difficult to work with.
Team engagement dropped. Sameer, who once excelled at everything, was now falling short. The CEO’s stress mounted, and low team engagement scores told the story: lack of alignment and engagement was dragging down performance.

Sameer’s Despair and Reflection
Sameer was in despair. For the first time in his long career, he faced a low phase. Work had become stressful. Despite his efforts to change, success seemed out of reach.
Sound familiar? We’ve all seen many "Sameers" around us. Whether as managers, colleagues, or peers, we’ve encountered leaders struggling with similar challenges. So, how do we help Sameer? How does he get back on track?
The Coaching Conversation
In a coaching session, Sameer talked a lot about his past successes and pride. This reflection helped him realize that his continued success had created strong, rigid beliefs. His confidence had turned into a “know-it-all” attitude. As he shared his stories, it became clear that his pride had become his biggest challenge.
Slowly, Sameer started to understand his team’s feedback about his rigid style and resistance to change. He saw his manager’s frustration and realized he was trying to solve new problems with old methods. Success had a flip side, and Sameer was facing it head-on.
Key Learnings and Takeaways
Sameer’s story teaches us several valuable lessons. Success can create strong beliefs that resist change, making it crucial to stay flexible and open to new ideas. Support from one leader can build credibility, but it’s important to expose talent to different leaders and contexts to ensure continuous growth. Honest feedback from team members, mentors, and friends is vital for development, and leaders should encourage open discussions and avoid yes-men who create false beliefs. Staying humble and connected to the ground reality helps leaders stay in touch with their teams. Embracing and learning from failure is key to becoming a stronger leader, and seeking guidance from a certified coach can provide the reflection needed for a turnaround.
Sameer’s journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of flexibility, feedback, and continuous learning. Have you ever faced a similar challenge? How did you handle it? Let’s share our stories and learn from each other.
