The Power of Perspective

The Power of Perspective

Nearing the end of a long journey, a young man comes to the banks of a deep, wide river.? He doesn’t know how to cross it and begins to ponder the challenge.

After several hours, he sees a Zen master on the other side of the river and calls out to him:

“Oh, wise one, can you tell me how to cross this river and get to the other side?”

The Zen master thinks for a moment and then replies:

“My son, you are on the other side.”

In my own life, I have a long history of trying to get somewhere else.? Some new goals, new job, new certification, new recognition, new river to cross. It’s what I pursued, with abandon, for over 40 years.

But none of that matters now.?? I have great friends, relatively good health, money in the bank, a place to volunteer, talent to contribute somewhere, and have lost a whole bunch of weight.? Light as a feather; well, not quite!

Perhaps you can relate.? You work in senior care of some sort.? You are young and have come to a river to cross.? This is where I suggest you be cautious; the next rung up the ladder in your career may not be the best one to take, or at least not yet.?

For example, the role of the Executive Director is often considered to be the pinnacle of success.? Or to be a “Regional” of some sort.

Stay with it, at least for now.? Maybe you are right where you are supposed to be.

On the right side of the river.
