The Power of Persistence

The Power of Persistence

?This week, we’re exploring what it means to stick with something and continue showing up even when the world tells you “not yet.”

My son’s journey in theater wasn’t an overnight success.

For 12 months, he worked tirelessly in his high school theater company, facing rejection after rejection.?

Instead of giving up, he dug in — taking feedback, volunteering behind the scenes, and focusing on growth. His journey from the production crew to a leading role is a powerful reminder that success is built on consistent effort and resilience.?

Success isn’t about where you start — it’s about what you do when no one’s watching.

Building Success, One Step at a Time

Rejection isn’t the end of the story. It’s a moment to reassess, refocus, and grow. Here’s how to keep momentum:

Align Yourself with Growth Opportunities

Get involved in spaces where you can develop the skills you need. It’s not always about being front and center; sometimes, the best lessons happen behind the scenes.

Do the Work Others Avoid

Take on the unglamorous tasks that others overlook. It’s in the doing — not the dreaming — that you’ll build resilience and skills.

Make Feedback Actionable

Instead of getting defensive, break down constructive criticism into steps you can act on. Growth is in the adjustments.

Stay Consistent

Show up daily, even when it feels like no one is watching. Progress is cumulative, and every small effort compounds over time.

Recognize Your Progress

Acknowledge the effort you’re putting in. Celebrating growth, no matter how small, keeps you motivated.

Activity:

Transforming Setbacks into Growth?

Identify an area of rejection or setback in your life, analyze its impact, and create an actionable plan to turn it into progress.

Materials Needed:

  • A journal or notebook
  • A pen or pencil
  • A quiet space for reflection

Step 1: Reflect on a Setback

Think about an area in your life where you’ve experienced rejection or a setback (e.g., a missed promotion, a failed project, or a personal goal not achieved).

Write down the following:

  • What was the setback?
  • How did it make you feel?
  • What feedback or lessons (if any) did you receive from the experience?

Step 2: Reframe the Experience

Ask yourself these questions and write your answers:

  • What did this experience teach me?
  • What skills or areas can I improve based on this?
  • How can I turn this setback into an opportunity for growth?

Step 3: Create a Growth Plan

Break your insights into actionable steps:

  • Identify one specific skill or area to work on.
  • List 2-3 actions you can take in the next week to improve (e.g., attend a workshop, ask for feedback, practice a skill).
  • Set a measurable goal for the next 30 days related to this improvement.

Step 4: Take Action (Ongoing)

Schedule time to complete the actions you’ve identified.

  • Track your progress each week in your journal:
  • What did you do?
  • What worked?
  • What can you adjust moving forward?

Optional Group Activity:

If you're doing this as part of a team or group, pair up and share your reflections and growth plans. Offer constructive feedback to one another and help refine actionable steps.

Outcome:

By completing this activity, you’ll shift your mindset from frustration to focus, turning your setback into a clear plan for growth and progress.?

Progress is a process, and success isn’t built overnight. It’s the accumulation of small, intentional actions — the kind that often go unnoticed but make all the difference over time. Whether you’re growing your career, your craft, or yourself, keep showing up, and trust that the work you’re doing today is preparing you for tomorrow’s opportunities.

Until Next Week,

?

Rejection is hard and it's important not to associate rejection with our inherent value. Rejection hurts so much because we take it as a reflection on us. If we can reframe rejection as redirection, we can keep persisting. It will still hurt, but it won't stop us from pursuing our dreams.
