The Power of Perseverance and Positive Attitude
I've been away for a while from my newsletter, adjusting to changes and finding balance. During this time, I haven't had the opportunity to research and write on topics related to security, risk management, or technology. However, my absence has allowed me to reconnect with the essence of my journey and the lessons I've learned along the way. In this edition, I want to share a personal anecdote that has nothing to do with my usual content, but it carries a valuable message about perseverance and the power of a positive attitude.
Once upon a time in 2006, shortly after graduating from high school in 2005, I embarked on my journey to find my first formal job. I had just completed a year of English language training at the INA institute, eager to put my skills to the test. Armed with a stack of printed resumes, I set out on a daily bus commute to the free trade zones, determined to find employment.
Every day, I visited multiple companies, going from one place to another, handing out my resumes. I must have visited at least 25 different companies in a week, hopeful that one of them would recognize my potential. Rejection after rejection did not deter my spirit; I kept pushing forward, driven by the belief that persistence would eventually pay off.
Then, one day, as I walked into a Western Union corporate office, clutching my last few resumes, something unexpected happened. The person I approached asked me if I had time for an interview right then and there. Surprised and excited, I gladly accepted the opportunity. Little did I know that this spontaneous encounter would change the course of my life.

During the interview, my positive attitude and genuine enthusiasm shone through. The employer saw beyond my lack of experience and recognized the determination burning within me. To my astonishment, they extended an offer on the spot, and with a wide grin, I accepted. It was a Friday, and I was to begin my new job the following Monday. In just five days, my persistent pursuit had paid off, opening the door to new opportunities and experiences.
Times may have changed since then, but the underlying message remains the same: never cease to search and give it your all. I have come to realize that employers often seek more than just technical skills. They value attitude, resilience, and the ability to communicate effectively. Even if you lack certain technical expertise, a positive mindset and a willingness to learn can be the key to landing your dream job.
Reflecting on my journey, I've come to appreciate the significance of both sides of the hiring process. A few years ago, when I found myself in a position to hire someone, my senior manager advised me to prioritize attitude and communication skills above all else. Technical knowledge can be taught and acquired, but a positive attitude and effective communication are essential qualities that foster growth and success within a team.
So, remember this story when you face challenges and setbacks in your own job search or professional pursuits. Stay determined, maintain a positive attitude, and never stop striving. Sometimes, all it takes is one opportunity to change the course of your life. Embrace the power of perseverance and let your passion shine through, for success awaits those who dare to persist.

1 年Excellent reflexion. Years ago I was in a similar situation. My cureent company probably saw my potential but essentially my actitude. Today in a regional role leading Latam talent acquisition team I strongly believe that actitude replace technical skills is most of the time for not saying always. Actitude is everything in this dinamic and challebging work. Thanks for this reflexion.
