Power to the People - Leadership Styles

Having worked in and lead teams for several years, I am always interested in leadership styles, what works, what doesn’t and what style suits me.

Here are some of the main leadership styles

  • Autocratic Leadership:

The “I call the shots” type. The leader makes decisions without consulting the team. It’s efficient for quick decisions, but it can feel restrictive and demotivating for the team since they don’t have much say.

  • Democratic Leadership:

The “let’s decide together” approach. The leader involves the team in the decision-making process. It fosters creativity, collaboration, and ownership, though it can take time to come to a consensus.

  • Laissez-faire Leadership:

The “you got this” leader. Super laid-back, they trust the team to get things done with minimal supervision. It works great with self-motivated, skilled teams but can be chaotic without enough structure or guidance.

  • Transformational Leadership:

The “big picture visionary.” These leaders are inspiring and focus on driving change, innovation, and growth. They motivate the team toward a shared vision but might not be as detail-oriented or hands-on.

  • Servant Leadership:

The “how can I help you succeed?” leader. They prioritize the team’s needs and focus on supporting, empowering, and helping others grow. The idea is that when the leader serves their team, everyone performs better and the team thrives.

Each of these styles can work well in different situations, and many leaders mix elements of all four depending on the circumstances!

The leadership styles that I can most relate to are Democratic and Servant although I have experienced nearly every style over the course of my career. Both styles probably take longer to implement and sometimes decisioning making takes a little longer but over the long term bring the best results.

I am currently reading Satya Nadella’s book ‘Hit Refresh’, where he discusses empathy in great detail which can be ever present in both Servant and Democratic leadership styles. I think we can all agree that Satya’s approach worked, and he has managed to grow Microsoft to what it is today.

I would love to hear what your thoughts are and what styles resonate with you

interesting read Ben thank you. I think at times we need to try to adopt all of those styles but my preference is to underpin my thinking with servant at its core and then use other styles as the need arises. Thoughts?
