The Power of a PCM Profile

The Power of a PCM Profile

I often get asked: Why should I learn the Process Communication Model (PCM)? How will it benefit me at work or home? Is it worth the investment of time and money? What will a PCM Profile tell me?

Here’s a quick "elevator pitch" answer—though there’s so much more I could say on the subject! ?? Let’s explore what knowing someone’s PCM profile can reveal about how to collaborate effectively, build strong connections, and motivate them based on what truly matters to them.

A PCM Profile Example

A sample PCM Profile - Meet Alex

Let’s consider an example. Meet Alex, whose Harmonizer Base Personality Type and a Thinker Phase.

Given his Harmonizer Base personality type and his strong energy on the Thinker and Persister floors, here’s what I know about Alex:

  • Sensitive, compassionate, and warm
  • Logical, responsible, and organized
  • Dedicated, observant, and conscientious

How to Communicate with Alex

To connect and communicate effectively, start by addressing the “human being” in him. Share a bit about yourself—your family, your life—and ask about his. Only after this foundation is set, move on to discussing facts, data, numbers, ideas, pros and cons, values, and mission.

What Alex Needs to Thrive at Work

For Alex to be productive and engaged, he needs:

  • Colleagues who feel like friends
  • A human-to-human approach—feeling valued as a person, not just a resource
  • Space for personal conversations between work tasks
  • A benevolent yet democratic leadership style
  • Structure and clear expectations
  • Defined milestones, deadlines, and responsibilities
  • Responsible, logical, and loyal colleagues he can trust
  • Opportunities to express his feelings, thoughts, and opinions

How to Motivate Alex

  • Recognize his competence, ideas, and productivity. Acknowledge his clear thinking and logical approach. Respect his time. Provide data.
  • Occasionally, appreciate him for his human qualities—his warmth, compassion, and care for colleagues. Spend time chatting with him without an agenda.

This is just a brief glimpse of how understanding Alex’s PCM profile can enhance our working relationship—I could easily write pages more about how I can spot his distress starting with the first, subtle ones and know what he needs to get out of it before it becomes conflictual, etc.

And you know what’s even better: you don’t need to have his PCM Profile before you! Nope! PCM is a behavioural model. That means that once you’ve done the training, you know how to asses his behaviours and communication style to understand the most relevant characteristics of his PCM Profile. Just by observing the way he talks and behaves, you will know what you need to better communicate with him, better motivate him and forge a stronger relationship with him.

If this approach resonates with you, let’s connect!

I deliver PCM training for organizations across Europe and also run Open PCM Training sessions (live, online, on Zoom) twice a year.

The 9th Edition will start in February 2025 so you're just in time to join! We'll be meeting:

  • Thursdays, 13 February to 13 March (in Romanian)
  • Fridays, 14 February to 14 March (in English)
  • From 9:00 to 13:00 CET, Live, Online (Zoom)

Disclaimers:

  1. These thoughts, this analysis and these recommendations are my own and do not represent the view of Kahler Communications.
  2. One must also be aware that?not everything can be explained through PCM. As much as I love this training and see its utility in everyday life, we humans are way too complex beings to be deciphered through a training session that is taught in only three days. The way we were educated, the culture and the society we grew in, the events in our life (happy or traumatising) all leave marks on the way we think, react, talk, behave, on the stories we build about ourselves and the world around us. Here’s to us!
