The Power of Pausing: Why Taking Your Foot Off the Pedal Can Drive Greater Success

The Power of Pausing: Why Taking Your Foot Off the Pedal Can Drive Greater Success

For many business owners, the idea of slowing down seems impossible. The constant pressure to grow, hit targets, and keep everything moving can create a mindset where taking a break feels like a luxury you can’t afford. But what if this relentless drive is actually holding you back?

Jaime and Kevin White, seasoned business consultants with a deep understanding of what drives true success, have seen this struggle time and again. Jaime, who once found herself on the brink of burnout, knows firsthand the toll that constant pressure can take. At 34, she realized that if she didn’t make a change, she could end up with serious health issues, much like her mother. The exhaustion was so profound that her mind began to welcome the idea of escape—of just being done.

But Jaime made a different choice. She decided to take her foot off the pedal, to prioritize her health and well-being. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was a necessary one. Through practices like acupuncture and energy work, she began to reconnect with herself, listen to her body, and heal. Today, Jaime is living a life that energizes her, doing work that aligns with her gifts and strengths, and maintaining healthy boundaries that allow her to thrive both personally and professionally.

Kevin, on the other hand, brings a different perspective. With gifts of wonder and enablement, Kevin understands the importance of asking the right questions and creating an environment where people can grow. He sees that many business owners are stuck in a cycle of constant action, without pausing to reflect on whether they’re truly moving in the right direction.

One of the core principles that Jaime and Kevin emphasize is understanding your basic human needs, a concept made famous by the late motivational speaker Jim Rohn. According to Rohn, there are four basic human needs that everyone must fulfill to lead a satisfying life:

  1. Certainty: The need for stability and security. For business owners, this might mean having a reliable income or a steady flow of clients. But if certainty becomes too dominant, it can lead to stagnation and fear of change.
  2. Variety: The need for new experiences and challenges. While it’s crucial to have some level of predictability, variety ensures that you stay engaged and creative in your work. Without it, boredom and burnout are inevitable.
  3. Significance: The need to feel important and valued. Business owners often fulfill this need by achieving goals and building a successful company. However, if significance becomes the sole focus, it can lead to isolation and a lack of meaningful connections.
  4. Connection: The need for relationships and love. This is often the most neglected need for high-achieving individuals. Focusing solely on work can strain personal relationships and lead to feelings of loneliness and disconnection.

These four needs are foundational, and until they are stabilized, it’s difficult to fully embrace the higher needs of the spirit: growth and contribution.

Growth is the need to constantly develop, to learn, and to expand your capabilities. It’s about pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone and evolving as a person. Contribution is the need to give back, to make a difference in the lives of others, and to leave a legacy. These needs are what drive us to do meaningful work that resonates deeply with who we are.

However, growth and contribution cannot be fully embraced if the foundational needs of certainty, variety, significance, and connection are not met. When business owners are constantly in survival mode, focusing only on the day-to-day grind, they are unable to pursue these higher spiritual needs effectively. They are too consumed by the immediate pressures of work to think about how they can grow as individuals or contribute to something greater than themselves.

Jaime’s experience with overcoming burnout, combined with Kevin’s gift for wonder and enabling growth, allows them to help others fill in the gaps in their lives and businesses. They use tools like the Working Genius framework by Patrick Lencioni to help teams identify where they might be lacking in the areas of invention, activation, or implementation. Often, the missing middle—where ideas are developed into action—is where teams struggle the most. By filling these gaps, business owners can move from idea to implementation more effectively, without burning out.

If you find yourself feeling like you can’t take your foot off the pedal, it might be time to reassess. Are you meeting your basic human needs? Are you allowing yourself the time and space to grow, both personally and professionally? By addressing these questions and taking a step back, you might find that slowing down is the key to speeding up your success.

Once you’ve stabilized the foundational needs, you can begin to focus on the deeper aspects of your life and work: personal growth and meaningful contribution. These are the areas where true fulfillment lies, and where you can find lasting peace, energy, and connection.

If Jaime’s and Kevin’s insights resonate with you, consider taking the first step toward a more balanced and fulfilling approach to your work. Whether it’s through a discovery call, a Working Genius assessment, or simply giving yourself permission to pause, remember that your greatest successes often come when you allow yourself to slow down, truly listen, and align with the deeper needs of your spirit.

Without conscious adjustments, “business” can quickly turn into “busy-ness. After completing my medical Qigong doctoral program, I decided to sell a successful studio. I needed time to fully embody the core teaching of finding balance and making space to be in the flow.

This is so true and reminds me of this quote. Society tells us to go...but what if we actually listened, rested and our productivity increased by being, then doing, flowing then going.
