The Power of the Pause: Why Taking a Work Sabbatical was my Next Career Move and could be Yours!

?? In our fast-paced, always-on world, the concept of taking a break from work might seem counterintuitive. We often find ourselves caught up in the daily grind, chasing deadlines and striving to meet ever-increasing productivity and sales targets. However, there's a transformative practice that's gaining traction and could be your secret to career success: the work sabbatical. Today, I want to share my personal journey and the profound benefits I gained from taking a work sabbatical.

A work sabbatical is a purposeful and extended break from your regular job or career. It's not a sign of giving up or running away from responsibilities; rather, it's a strategic pause that can rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul, ultimately making you a more effective and fulfilled professional when you return.

?? The Decision to Pause:

Throughout my entire work career I’ve never taken more than a one-week vacation. Even though I worked for great companies that offered generous annual three-week vacation days and even six-week paid sabbaticals!

Let’s face it, in a Sales and Professional Services role you don’t get quota relief during your time off and the fact of returning behind my targets scared me enough to not want to take a break and fall behind professionally. But during my last role I had the fortunate opportunity to take that pause since our last company was sold and my equity position or the proverbial “golden handcuffs” were lifted.

?? Renewed Creativity:

Stepping away from the daily grind opens the door to fresh ideas and innovative thinking. Whether it was climbing Zion’s infamous Angel’s Landing, noted as one of the most dangerous hikes in the United States, mountain biking the incredible trails of Sedona or enjoying morning coffee at a remote beach in Big Sur. It's a chance to let your creativity flourish! During my sabbatical, I had the privilege to explore passions and hobbies that had long been neglected. This break allowed me to step out of my comfort zone, encounter new experiences, and connect with inspiring individuals. It was like a spark igniting within me, fostering creativity and innovative thinking. The newfound perspectives I gained became invaluable in my return to work, enabling me to approach challenges with a fresh mindset.

?? Work-Life Balance Reclaimed:

Work-life balance had been a constant struggle before my sabbatical. The break allowed me to regain control over my life and invest in self-care. Spending quality time with my family and engaging in activities I was passionate about became a daily reality. The result was not only a better work-life balance but also a newfound energy and enthusiasm that I brought back to the workplace. Achieving a balance is key!

?? Skills & Personal Growth:

During my sabbatical, I traveled extensively, volunteered for a cause close to my heart, and learned new skills. These experiences broadened my horizons and allowed me to connect with diverse individuals from various backgrounds. The expanded network I developed during this time has been invaluable in my career, opening doors and opportunities that I could not have foreseen.

?? The Power of Resilience:

My sabbatical was not all sunshine and roses. It presented its own set of challenges and tested my adaptability and resilience. Facing adversity during this period was an opportunity for personal growth and a chance to hone my problem-solving skills, ultimately making me a more resilient and adaptable professional.

In conclusion, my sabbatical was not a step back from my career but a leap forward. It was a strategic investment in my personal and professional growth, a conscious pause that gave me new skills, fresh perspectives, and a deeper understanding of myself. If you're considering a work sabbatical, I urge you to take the leap and embrace the transformative power of a well-deserved break. Your journey to growth and self-discovery awaits! ??

So true. Taking time off to take a step-forward both personally + professionally. It’s hard to think clearly about next steps until you have time to recharge, rebalance, and give yourself space to explore.
