The Power of Passion: Transforming Work into Purpose

This week’s column is a collaboration with Stacy Lieb . Stacy is a colleague at DIRECTV and it’s an honor to share this space with her. I hope you enjoy this week’s topic on passion in the workplace.

John here, happy to be a collaborator With Stacy. Do you incorporate passion into your work or is your role “just a job” for you? If you follow LinkedIn content creators, you will notice one common trait they all share: passion.? Passion for what they do for a living, and passion for what they can bring to the table. Passion to drive their business and themselves to success. Stacy shares her views on passion below:

When I interviewed for my current position, the interview team saw me as a personality and energy "fit" for the role. As an external candidate, I didn’t have insider knowledge of the company. What helped me obtain the role was my enthusiasm and desire to fill this role – my passion for the position.

Passion isn’t only about the work that we do – it allows us to connect with our colleagues. I've formed friendships with coworkers that are as strong as those I've had for years, even though we've only met in person once or twice. Because we have passion for our roles, our company and shared interests, we use our enthusiasm to build each other up.

It’s important to find passion at work because work can be a core piece of our identity. When we describe ourselves quickly, we often mention our job along with other important aspects of our lives. For me, it's "I'm a parent, I work for DIRECTV, and I love pizza and board games." There's more to me, of course, but my work is a fundamental part of how I see myself.

I believe we should feel empowered to use "chosen" job titles that truly reflect our roles and identities. When someone asks what I do, I say "chief of staff" and "culture lead" because those fit both my role and identity within the company. I feel proud of these titles, which helps me feel passionate about my day-to-day work.

Finding passion at work isn't always easy. We all have moments when we feel overworked, stressed, or underappreciated. The key is to find the things you love about your role – or create work that you love – to mix in with your day-to-day responsibilities. Each of us can take a moment to be a friend to a colleague, think of a great idea, or innovate.

Passion is a mindset. If we believe in it, we can bring it with us to work and throughout other parts of our lives. So, let's embrace our roles, find our passions, and propel ourselves forward by being proud of our roles, of our accomplishments, and our contributions to our companies’ success.

Thank you Stacy for your thoughts. I will close this week article with some notes from my article on LinkedIn titled “The Passion”. Knowing that technology now drives my business, I am in a place to where I need to find a way to stay relevant not just in my business, but in ANY business.? What can I offer my company that technology can’t? What can I do each week that a computer or AI technology can’t? I can bring passion to the table.

I believe that the days of doing the minimum to get by in a career are gone. Competition in the marketplace today (For almost everything) is so fierce that “Just getting by” is no longer an option. Companies today are looking for top performers in their respective fields, because only the best will win at business. When most companies are downsizing staff to save on overhead, the top performers always seem to have a job. When every member of your team is equal in knowledge and training, who do you think your employer is going to keep when the downsizing comes to your group? The answer is simple. The top performers and the most passionate will always be a part of a conversation to stay on and continue to push their respective companies forward and drive change.
