One skill that I never imagined would be so vital is the ability to observe.?It's my 14th year in growth marketing, and I've worked with various companies and agencies, including corporate and advertising firms. And the most undervalued quality I discovered was the ability to observe, listen, and capture the journey. Today we will discuss the talent of observation and why it is important to master.?


However, the ability to observe and truly see what is happening around us is a skill that can have a profound impact on our personal and professional lives. In this article, we will explore the art of observation, its importance in decision-making and problem-solving, and how to cultivate the ability to observe as an outsider.


The Art of Observation:

Observation is more than just looking; it is about paying attention to details, patterns, and nuances that often go unnoticed. It involves engaging all our senses and being fully present in the moment. By observing, we can gain valuable insights, spot opportunities, and identify potential risks. It allows us to see beyond the surface and uncover underlying truths that may be hiding in plain sight.


Why Observation Matters:

  • Enhanced Understanding: Through observation, we gain a deeper understanding of people, situations, and environments. By actively observing, we can decipher non-verbal cues, uncover motivations, and gain insights into human behaviour.
  • Informed Decision-Making: Observing helps us make better decisions by giving us a more complete picture of the situation. It allows us to gather data, analyze trends, and identify potential challenges or opportunities before making critical choices.
  • Problem-Solving and Innovation: Observation is a crucial tool in problem-solving and fostering innovation. By observing how things work, we can identify inefficiencies, gaps, and areas for improvement. It opens our minds to new perspectives and alternative solutions.
  • Building Empathy and Connection: Observation allows us to connect with others on a deeper level. By actively listening and observing, we can understand different perspectives, empathize with others' experiences, and build stronger relationships.


The Power of Observing as an Outsider:

Observing as an outsider refers to adopting a fresh perspective, detached from preconceived notions and biases. This approach enables us to see things from a new angle, bringing a fresh set of eyes to the table. Here's how to cultivate the ability to observe as an outsider:


  • Embrace Curiosity: Approach every situation with a sense of curiosity and a willingness to learn. Ask questions, challenge assumptions, and seek to understand different viewpoints
  • Practice Active Listening: Listening is a vital component of observation. Give your full attention to others, absorb their words, and pay attention to non-verbal cues. This will help you gain valuable insights into their thoughts and feelings.
  • Step Back and Reflect: Take a step back from your own biases and opinions. Cultivate a reflective mindset that allows you to evaluate situations objectively. Question your own assumptions and consider alternative perspectives.
  • Embody Empathy: Put yourself in someone else's shoes and strive to understand their experiences and emotions. Empathy opens the door to deeper observation and connection.
  • Seek Diversity: Surround yourself with a diverse range of people, ideas, and experiences. Exposure to different perspectives broadens your observation skills and enriches your understanding of the world.
  • Be aware of your own biases:?Everyone has biases, but it is important to be aware of them. When you are aware of your biases, you can be more objective in your observations.
  • Ask questions:?Don't be afraid to ask questions. Asking questions can help you to understand what you are observing.
  • Be open to different perspectives:?When you observe, be open to different perspectives. This means being willing to see things from different angles.


How to Observe

Observation is the act of paying attention to and learning from what is happening around you. It is a fundamental skill that can be used in a variety of contexts, from personal development to business management.

There are many different ways to observe. Some people are naturally observant, while others need to practice the skill. There are also a variety of techniques that can be used to improve your observation skills.


Here are some tips for how to observe:

  • Be present.?The first step to effective observation is to be present in the moment. This means paying attention to what is happening around you without judgment or distraction.
  • Be open-minded.?When you observe, it is important to be open to what you see and hear.?
  • Don't make assumptions or judgments. Just observe what is happening.
  • Be curious.?Ask questions and explore what you see. The more you learn, the better you will be able to understand what is happening around you.
  • Be patient.?Observation takes time and practice. Don't expect to become an expert overnight. Just keep practising and you will improve your skills over time.

Here are some specific examples of how observation can be used in leadership and management: I know it sounds cliche and simple, but trust me it always works.

  • A manager observes that one of her/his employees is struggling with a new task. The manager takes the employee aside and asks her what she is struggling with. The employee explains that she/he is unfamiliar with the software used for the task. The manager provides the employee with training on the software, and the employee is able to complete the task successfully.
  • A leader observes that his team is not meeting its goals. The leader meets with the team to discuss the problem. The team members explain that they are having difficulty working together. The leader provides the team with training on teamwork, and the team is able to improve its performance.
  • A manager observes that her team is becoming increasingly stressed. The manager meets with the team to discuss the problem. The team members explain that they are feeling overwhelmed by the workload. The manager provides the team with some additional resources, and the team is able to manage its workload more effectively.


Observation is a powerful tool that can be used to improve leadership, management, personal growth, professional success, and meaningful connections. By improving our observation skills, we can unlock new insights, make informed decisions, and foster innovation.

Embracing the ability to observe as an outsider allows us to see beyond our own biases and limitations, opening up a world of possibilities. So, let us pause, look closely, and embrace the art of observation in our journey towards continuous learning and growth.
