The Power of Next 2023

Brian was always a bit conflicted on the notion of the power of now. He’d read and heard about the belief, some would say fact, that the best way to really live is to be in the moment. Taking in one’s surroundings, feeling the pulse and rhythm of the body and simply staying focused on “what is” is considered, by many, to be the spiritual high ground. Brian tried to understand how being in the present is really the only form of “being.” Everything else exists only in the mind. The past and the future are not now. They only have their place in our memories and in our hopes, but not now.

?So, Brian sat on the floor pondering this for quite some time, an exercise, which he discerned as so many different moments, strung together. There is just no way to stop and freeze in the present he figured. Things are always happening, moving, and changing and time, as they say, waits for no man, although Brian often recognized how often time seems to wait for women just fine. He was lost in that last thought when he heard a knock at the door. He stood up and moved toward the sound and in the very moment he opened the door, everything changed - In a flash, “now” seemed like the safest place he’d ever known.

Brian was startled to see the cameras, news trucks and the crowd that was beginning to form on his lawn. The questions, shouts, and flashes from cameras were coming in so fast that he could not understand what was happening, and he began to feel overwhelmed and a little queasy. He shut the door, locked it, and stood for a moment with his back pressed up against the door. All of his thoughts from just a moment ago on being in the now became jumbled as the new now took over. He was experiencing real time distress and yet was able to mentally project his next move. He made some mental notes to himself to write this down and revisit the many feelings and thoughts that were now crowding his ability to plan an escape. Just then, (what was the now at the time) the noise from outside abruptly ended. An eerie silence ensued, and Brian slid down the door until he was sitting on the floor.?

?For what seemed like a long time, but only a minute or two, Brian stayed within the moment in a Zen like trance of sorts. He strained to hear something - a sound or a voice, anything that would signal that he was not alone. He heard nothing except his own breathing, and after a while he stood up and opened the door. Nobody there - no cameras, people, or questions. He stood there for a moment, closed his eyes, and then smiled. He closed the book and set it on the nightstand.

?When he awoke, he realized he had discovered a new power: An ability to imagine anything, anytime; a power that could create new scenarios, and opportunities - The power to bring our thoughts to life. It’s called the power of next and all aspects of creating positive change can be found in the Szen Books - “Whereas Zen is of the moment and what is, Szen celebrates what could be.”

?Hoping you use your power to create a fantastic future.
