The Power of Networking

We may be spending more time meeting people online than we’ve ever done before - but that doesn’t mean a traditional face-to-face meeting doesn’t have a part to play.
According to many entrepreneurs, the latter is more likely to prove the key to making meaningful, quality relationships. That’s because being able to see someone’s facial expressions and non-verbal behaviour is far more telling of intent than a quickly answered email.
Of course, online communication has a major part to play in business too. Just look at the proliferation of PropTech companies who’ve made their presence felt in the property market over the past decade or so. Online property portal Rightmove and its ilk changed how we search property these days, while online estate agents Purple Bricks are fast taking over the role of the high-street estate agency.
Networking events - whether it’s a monthly landlord’s meeting, annual property conference or quarterly get-together - remain unsurpassed. This is because, as well as having an extremely valuable business side, there’s the sheer joy of getting to communicate with our fellow human beings on a one-to-one level. As a race, we’re sociable creatures after all…
Networking and the property industry
Having the opportunity to meet professionals from all sectors of the property business is invaluable. A carefully cultivated estate agent can be excellent at providing leads on property which hasn’t even been advertised yet, as well as a source of valuable advice about how properties are selling in a particular locale.
Landlords can share recommendations for maintenance, as well as tips on accounting software or the best social housing organisations to work with. They can also swap legal advice and tenancy solutions.
Investors, of course, can advise on tips about up-and-coming developments, look for partners to invest with and swap information on particular hot spot cities.
Developers need property investors to buy their apartments and to know the type of strategies investors are concentrating on these days. They also need to be able to tell the genuine investors via the ‘good talkers.’
Property lawyers can help a stressed landlord having trouble with his or her current tenants by suggesting a few tactics while the opportunity to meet a crowd of landlords can always help boost a lawyer’s client list.
Individuals involved in property management have an opportunity to impress landlords by outlining exactly what their service involves and, like the lawyer, to meet other potential future clients.
Other benefits of networking events include the invaluable information you’ll often pick up from guest speakers who have been invited along. These tend to be industry experts in the field, such as property lawyers and successful property investors themselves.
