The power of networking for public speaking

For many, the idea of in-person networking can be a bit cringe-worthy, a bit ick! It's not uncommon to feel a tad anxious or overwhelmed by the whole scene, especially when it starts feeling like a sales pitch rather than genuine connection-building. So, naturally, cozying up indoors and hiding behind a laptop screen to interact can seem like a much more appealing option.
Sending off a quick email to a work contact instead of braving a coffee meet up? Yep, that sounds like a breeze for plenty of us. It's just so much simpler, right? No need to worry about awkward silences or what to wear— just type away from the comfort of your own home.
And let's not forget about virtual networking sessions. Camera off, joggers on— It's comfy, it's convenient, and hey, who doesn't love a zoom call from the couch?
But, despite all the perks of staying in our cozy bubbles, there's something special and energising about face-to-face interactions. As nerve-wracking as they might be at times, there's no denying the magic of a genuine smile, or a shared laugh over a cup of coffee. In my experience in-person networking brings a certain authenticity and depth to connections that you just can't replicate online. It is also a no brainer for working on public speaking, raising visibility, and increasing inner confidence.
It's not always easy - granted! Sometimes the venues can be noisy, and overly subscribed, but what a fantastic way to build your confidence, and watch how others do it well.
?At its core, networking is about forging meaningful connections with others—building relationships based on mutual trust, respect, and shared interests. In the realm of being a female looking to raise your visibility, these connections can be invaluable. Networking provides opportunities to meet fellow business owners, event organisers, and industry professionals who can offer you support, guidance, and even speaking opportunities.

Networking isn't just about promoting yourself, which is what I used to think—it's also a valuable learning opportunity. By engaging with other speakers, business owners, and industry insiders, you can gain insights, tips, and best practices to enhance your speaking skills, whilst finding opportunities to advance your business. Whether it's receiving feedback on your presentations , delivering an elevator pitch, or learning from the experiences of others, networking facilitates continuous learning and growth as a woman in business.

I WISH that I had acted on this way of thinking years and years ago. I stopped my own career in it's tracks, by hoping that I would be discovered, rather than dealing with the uncomfortable, getting out there, and being seen. I can assure you there are so many folks out here who want to listen, help and support you in your business and career endeavours. I would encourage you to embrace networking as an integral part of your public speaking journey, and watch as it propels you to new heights of visibility and influence.
If you career is held back due to a fear of speaking up, find your local networking events, and share your story.. you never where it might take you next.
