The Power of Networking in Healthcare

This newsletter is made possible through the support of Frank Randall, MPA with MedPro Financials.

This week, I have been thinking about networking a lot. My wife recently attended a medical conference for primary care clinicians. She came home and announced that she was going to pursue POCUS certification as there was a need for ultrasound-guided injections within her practice. This new project was inspired by networking. She was able to speak with other primary care clinicians who have successfully implemented this procedure within their practices.

Networking is one of the most important and yet underappreciated aspects of a successful healthcare career. Too often, healthcare professionals develop a sense of complacency and may not routinely interact with other professionals outside of their immediate clinical role. A great example of this is membership in professional associations. Membership in a professional organization provides an opportunity to network, access educational resources, and collectively lobby for the profession. And yet, less than 25% of physicians are members of the American Medical Association, a stark decline from a 75% membership in the 1950s. Below, we compiled a brief list of ways networking benefits your healthcare career:

  • Career Opportunities: Networking can lead to new job opportunities, promotions, or career advancements. It's common for jobs to be filled through personal connections or referrals.
  • Knowledge Exchange: Interacting with peers and experts allows for sharing ideas, insights, and experiences. This exchange can provide valuable learning opportunities and enhance one's understanding of their field. Professional conferences and meetings are great opportunities to meet with people in different locations, but practicing in the field of healthcare.
  • Professional Development: Networking can help in finding mentors and advisors who provide guidance, feedback, and support in professional growth. Research supports that having multiple mentors improves career progression.

Increased Visibility: Being active in professional circles raises one's profile and can lead to recognition as an expert or leader in one's field. In our podcast, we recently discussed the importance of personal branding in a healthcare career.

  • Access to Resources: Networks often provide access to resources that might not be available otherwise, such as exclusive information, tools, or training opportunities.
  • Support and Advice: Having a network means having access to advice and support from experienced individuals, which can be particularly beneficial during challenging times or when making important decisions.
  • Business Opportunities: For entrepreneurs and business professionals, networking can lead to partnerships, joint ventures, or new business opportunities.
  • Enhanced Confidence: Regular interaction with peers and professionals can boost self-confidence, which is key in personal and professional development.
  • Broader Perspectives: Networking exposes individuals to diverse viewpoints and ideas, which can broaden one's perspective and inspire innovation.
  • Personal Growth: Beyond professional benefits, networking can lead to personal growth through the development of interpersonal skills and the building of lasting friendships and connections.

Networking plays a crucial role in the professional development and career advancement of healthcare professionals. It involves building and maintaining relationships with peers, mentors, and industry leaders, which can provide significant benefits in this rapidly evolving field. Next week, we will dive deeper and discuss different ways healthcare professionals can network to further their careers.
