“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words, and that which cannot remain silent.” Victor Hugo
On the eve of World Music Day it is very important to understand the powers of music. The?Fête de la Musique, also known in English as?Music Day,?Make Music Day, or?World Music Day, is an annual music?celebration?that takes place on the 21st of June, which started in the year 1982. The festival has become an international phenomenon, celebrated on the same day in more than 700 cities in 120 countries, including India, Germany, Italy, Greece, Russia, Australia, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Canada, the United States, the UK, and Japan.(Wikipedia)
The only time I sang on Stage was in Kazakistan in Russian before the localites who sang along with me cheering me all along. A surprise for them that it got covered in the local newspaper. An Indian lady in a saree singing the very popular Russian song " Katyusha." A moment for me when music became the biggest point of connect between me and every member in the audience. It was a moment which is forever etched in my heart. I may not have understood every word I sang, but i definitely broke the language barrier.
What are the songs on your playlist? What are you currently humming? Pay attention for it is a reflection of your state of mind.We have our favourite songs & go to music when we want to be by ourselves. As little babies we are already grooving to music. Neuroscience has proof. One study from the Institute of Learning and Brain Sciences detected that after babies listen to music, their auditory and prefrontal cortexes look different. The benefits of music are immense especially at a very early stage in life. Music is both calming and many a time cathartic too.
Rafi Saab’s “Suhani Raat Dal Chuki”? is my go to song in whatever mood I am. Would love to know yours.
This week I decided to decipher what MUSIC as an acronym means to me:
Melody: Music and melody go hand in hand. The beauty of melody is however an individual choice. What I find melodious may not appeal to you. However the beauty of music is so beautifully described by the genius Yehudi Menuhin, “Music creates order out of chaos: for rhythm imposes unanimity upon the divergent, melody imposes continuity upon the disjointed, and harmony imposes compatibility upon the incongruous.”?
Universal appeal: The beauty of music is the the universality. It has the ability to cross manmade borders and can appeal across language barriers. Raj Kapoor’s songs being popular in Russia was where I noticed it first. H.W.Longfellow’s words convey this perfectly, “Music is the universal language of mankind.”?
Sound healing: There is enough and more evidence to prove about the healing powers of music. The Tibetan singing bowls are proof. If you have experienced that or the sound bath , you know the profound impact of what Oliver Sacks describes, “The power of music to integrate and cure... is quite fundamental. It is the profoundest non-chemical medication."
Introspection: During meditation a soft OM or the music of the Jal Tarang, the sitar or santoor or the gentle notes from the flute are enough to put you into a trance. It not only calms you but allows you to go inward. The American Singer and song writer Sza describes this phenomenon so precisely, “Music is my form of cleansing and introspection, so I have to grow in order to accomplish it.”

Calmness: The ability to calm a disturbed state of mind sometimes is a Prayer or an Instrumental piece. Sometimes the time with oneself is so important. It is the calmness that makes one introspect. The music that evokes emotion is the one that can calm you too. What is important is to listen even to the silence in it. The prodigy Mozart was spot on the? said, “The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between.”
Is your playlist ready? Would love to know your top 3 favourites and what does MUSIC mean to you.
