The power of the multi-tool

"You can't possibly fit all English grammar into one rule!" a colleague insisted. That's true, but there's no need for a complete set of rules.

Instead of arguing, I showed a picture of a multi-tool pocket knife. It doesn't hold all tools – only some essential ones. That's far more practical for day-to-day purposes than lugging around an entire toolbox.

You don't need the whole toolbox

Why would grammar be any different? All additional tools and rules are still available (should you ever need them), but I don't carry them around. I'm travelling light and bring my multi-purpose One Rule.

Like the pocket knife, its efficiency hinges on its simplicity. Isn't that what we want – for ourselves and our students? Yet standard methods insist on the full box of tools regardless.

One Rule is all you need

Like so many out-of-the-box solutions, the One Rule approach started with a problem – and with the realisation that grammar often s*cks for students and consequently for teachers. So I wanted to fix that.

Years of trial and error went into creating a multi-tool rule for word order and tenses, to capture the typical pattern of English. One Rule – to rule them all.
