The Power of “Move On”.

Some more business productivity-focused tips for this week.

1. The Power of Move On.

Back when I was running an agency, one of my office managers had a simple saying:

“Move on”.

Whenever there was heated discussion in a meeting, or a decision couldn’t be made, or something didn’t quite go our way, she would nod, think and say “move on”.

And everyone moved on.

Those two words saved the entire company countless hours of debate, arguments or being emotionally stuck on circumstances outside of our control.

They are also great words to use in our personal lives.

When something doesn’t work out the way we want, or when something clearly isn’t going to be resolved right now, remember — “move on”.

2. Systems and Huddles.

I recently read a great article in the Wall Street Journal about Zara’s use of an integrated sales system to help all their UK store managers synchronise their sales information every morning.

With it, they’re able to check data and insights from their store (and every other store in the UK) at 7am, and then by 7:20am, they’re aware of how they should operate that day.

This is the power of systems that provide real time information that can fuel business decisions and agility.

“But Aaron, what if we don’t have access to a real-time sales system?”

Well, that’s where your daily huddle comes in.

If you sync up with your team the first thing every day, you’ll have a read on exactly what is going on with the team, the market, and the company, and be able to make better decisions for how the day should proceed.

A lot of business owners shy away from doing daily huddles because they don’t want to feel like they’re obligated to show up every day, but that’s the wrong approach.

Daily huddles are the most important regular meeting you can do with your team, and the key to running an efficient operation.

3. Social Media.

My latest essay is a detailed look at social media and the role it plays in our lives and work.

Short preview:

It is possible to f*ck up your life by doing nothing but numbing your mind with endless entertainment feeds until 4am every day.
