The Power of Mindset: How to Use Your Thoughts to Overcome Stress and Burnout

As a U.S. citizen, one of the responsibilities we have is jury duty. This past Monday, I was summoned. Interestingly, as the staff spoke to the crowd, they kept bringing up, "Hey, we know you don't want to be here. You've got other things to do" etc. In other words, they were addressing our resentment at having to drop everything and serve.?

Resentment is a powerful emotion. As I say in my keynote, "Overcoming Burnout: How to Get Unstuck When You're Superglued to Resentment", if you're resentful, you're more likely to burn out and if you're burned out, you're more likely to stay stuck in resentment.

When I say "resentment," I'm really talking about how you feel when you tell yourself how other people "should" behave. Or when you're waiting for other people to take care of you...and they don't.

What are you resentful of? I bet that if you looked long and hard at it, you'd be able to boil it down to a "should" statement in your head.

The good news is that with some self-awareness, you can turn your resentment around. And, of course, if you're stuck -- reach out for some help. I've got?just the thing ?for you and your organization!

Sharon Grossman Cam Howey Great to reference mindset which grew out of the cognitive psychology literature and cognitive behavioral therapy .. CBT) years ago: shared cognitions, automatic thoughts. self defeating behaviors, schemas, social construction. etc. see work by Aaron Beck, Judith Beck, David Burns, Albert Ellis. We (and others like Joanne Martin) have built on these ideas to talk about culture as a "shared mindset" among employees and between employees and customers. A number of years ago we did a paper, "institutional antecedents of shared organizational cognitions" as a way to describe culture and its formation. So much has move on since then. https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/playbook-culture-agenda-why-what-how-dave-ulrich/ Thanks for referencing this legacy work.
