The Power of "Me Time" - Rediscovering Myself

It's simple to forget about ourselves in a society where devices, constant notifications, and the need to fit in prevail. And for almost ten years, I was no different. I made the mistake of attempting to appease everyone around me and answering "yes" to all requests out of a fear of disappointing them. My life became a jumble of obligations, jobs, and hidden interests as I attempted to establish my value in a world that moved quickly and never seemed to stop.

Getting Lost in the Hustle

I was pursuing my ambition of dancing by working nonstop and balancing low-paying jobs. I performed in shows for four years, barely making ten thousand rupees while keeping it a secret from my circle, but I persisted because it was my passion. However, the distinction between job and personal life disappeared as a result of night time corporate shifts and dance by day & evening practices. I didn't even realise I was losing myself since I was preoccupied with living up to everyone else's expectations.

Hitting a Wall

The realisation dawned on me when I realised I was completely exhausted, mentally and physically. In spite of everything I tried, I felt empty. I had entirely forgotten about my own needs because I was concentrating so much on making everyone else happy. It was a terrible and liberating realisation to realise that something needed to change.

Reclaiming "Me Time"

I vowed to myself in 2024 to regain control by giving "me time" first priority. I made a weekly commitment to spend time by myself, travel alone, discover new locations, and re-connect with the natural world. I began modestly, by spending time by myself in cafes, thinking back on my adventure, and just being. These peaceful times turned into my haven, a place where I could rediscover my true self.

Finding Peace in Solitude

Travelling alone was enlightening. I was able to travel at my own speed, discovering tranquilly and clarity in every moment as I strolled through quiet parks, beaches, and mountains. I learnt that those introspective, quiet moments are when real fulfilment originates, not other people's praise.

Cafes turned into my haven. There, sipping coffee, I thought back on my life. Being by myself and away from the noise of the outside world allowed me to re-establish a connection with my inner self. I began to listen to my own voice and stopped looking to other people for approval.

Embracing New Passions

My new form of therapy was fitness. Every workout, whether it was yoga, boxing, or weightlifting, served as a reminder of my resilience and perseverance. I also picked up the guitar, and even though I'm still studying and only at the basic level thanks to YouTube tutorials, I enjoy strumming chords and making music. These pursuits served as more than just pastimes; they were avenues for self-expression and reconnection with my passions.

Reading more books opened up new worlds for me. Each story, each lesson, added depth to my understanding of life and myself. It became a journey of continuous learning and growth.

Living Without Regrets

After all of this, I understood that "ME TIME" is not selfish—rather, it is necessary. Filling your own cup first will enable you to pour more freely into others. I began living a life that genuinely nourishes my spirit and stopped failing myself by chasing approval.

You should schedule some time for oneself, in my opinion. Make time to get back in touch with your true self, whether it's through solitary travel, taking up a new pastime, or just relaxing in a peaceful area. Recall that your relationship with yourself is the most significant one you have.

Furthermore, what do you know? I'm glad I have the alone time for "me time." It may appear strange or unusual to some, but it's what helps me stay grounded.
