The Power to Love

The Power to Love

How can I talk about portrait photography in a way that you can relate to? How can I get you to understand what it is I see and feel when I look at a person through my lens? I don’t think I can. Unless you have children. If you’re a mother or a father it might be useful to work with that metaphor. When you, through some miraculous process you can hardly understand, help to create another living, unique human being, you can be sometimes humbled by the power you possess. Not the power to create. For even animals have that. The power to love.

When you have a child you realize that we are made of each other. That we’re not as separate as we seem. I’m not saying that you need to have a child to see this, only that it’s more obvious, I think. And this is not about likeness. This is not about flesh and bone it’s about light - the light that’s within us. We are made of each other more in spirit than of flesh.

I call myself The Lighthouse Photography because of this. Each of us is lighthouse. Every single one of the seven point five billion of us. The world is studded with lighthouses. And every time I do a headshot, or a portrait, be it strictly business or highly personal, I try and capture that light. Because that’s when we see each other as more than just men and women. When that light glows we see each other as brothers and sisters. At least I do. I strive to capture that light and create portraits that feel painterly and almost surreal. Because these kinds of pictures are arresting. They compel you to slow down and look. They make you feel something. They’re memorable.

I do portraits and headshots for companies and teams. Who are of course people. And who care about each other and what they do. We’re not automatons. So yes, this is highly appropriate for business because business is increasingly about people. If I can feel your people I feel I can relate to them. And that’s who I want to do business with, people.
