The Power of Love

The Power of Love

If you’ve ever experienced the discomfort of loneliness or felt that there wasn’t enough love in your life, it’s highly likely that your life is feeling incomplete. Perhaps it’s a question of how we choose our priorities. One of the problems with the way that we invariably choose material goals over emotional wellbeing is that our deeper needs are often overlooked. In the great race for success, we focus our energies on our jobs and careers and accept that emotional wellbeing is less important than the next pay rise or promotion. It’s part of our culture. We’re encouraged to respect and admire people who are perceived as being successful - rather than appreciating people who are happy or fulfilled.

Whilst there’s a great deal of emphasis on the importance of commercial success in life, it’s easy to overlook the relevance of our relationships. And, if we’re being perfectly honest, the quality of our life is very much determined by the depth and significance of our emotional connections to other people.

The moment you have in your heart this extraordinary thing called love and feel the depth, the delight, the ecstasy of it, you will discover that for you the world is transformed.

- Jiddu Krishnamurti

We know that life can be a tough and challenging experience but we also recognise that it becomes a much richer and more satisfying journey when we share our hearts with others.

Do you feel that you have enough love in your life? It shouldn’t take too long to know the answer. Whatever your answer may be, it’s an unmistakable feeling. When you feel loved and supported and accepted, the feeling is unmistakable. It’s the foundation that helps us to rise above our pains and challenges, our setbacks and difficulties. It’s the fuel of human growth and resilience and the raw material of inner peace, contentment and fulfilment. In some ancient traditions, the power of love is described as the fundamental building block of reality. It has no opposite and exists as a pure expression of the power of creation. Perhaps this is a philosophical or even poetic way of describing the deeper implications of love but we all know that its presence is a powerful ingredient in the formula for emotional balance and a sense of completion. Without sufficient love in our lives, life will always feel incomplete.

Even after all this time the sun never says to the earth ‘You owe me’.

Look what happens with a love like that - It lights up the whole sky.

– Hafiz

If there’s one principle that will help you to experience the healing, balancing and restorative power of love in your life, it’s your willingness to give love to others.

But, if you’re going to enrich your life immeasurably with this potent energy, you have to be willing to offer it unconditionally. And that’s a problem for most individuals today. It’s an alien concept because, in our commercially-oriented society, we tend to think of all exchanges as an opportunity for personal gain. This expectation even extends into the realm of our personal emotional domain. Many people conduct their relationships as if they were a tradable commodity. We give in order to receive and this is where the imbalance occurs.

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.

― Lao Tzu

This, however, is not the full picture. There’s another and equally important dimension to this power that we also need to consider and it’s your willingness to offer unconditional love to yourself. This is as far from egocentric self-indulgence as you can get because it enables you to experience the power of complete acceptance within the realm of your own heart. It’s a potent antidote to loneliness and a powerful alternative to the disturbing sense of separation that characterises many people’s lives today. If you believe in your ability to change for the better, it’s incredibly helpful to begin the process of self-transformation from a position of self-acceptance in which you free yourself from the burden of judgement.

When you stop to think about the way you pass judgement on yourself – as well as on all the other people around you – on a constant, rolling basis, you soon realise that most of your judgements are harsh, negative and completely unhelpful. This constant form of self-judgement is projected out into the world and becomes the basis for our judgements on everyone else. You can see the problem here. But you can also see the answer.

By extending unconditional love to yourself, you will find it much easier to extend your love to the people around you.

If I had a flower for every time I thought of you, I could walk through my garden forever.

― Alfred Tennyson

Perhaps the main difficulty with this powerful concept is the way we use – or rather misuse - the word ‘love.’

We’re heavily conditioned by our culture, our literature, our interpretation of history and the vast amount of imaginary examples that flood our media. We develop a romanticised version of love that is unrelated to the world we live in. No wonder our romantic expectations are so frequently dashed! Perhaps a better word than love might be ‘acceptance’ because, when we learn to accept ourselves and the people we live and work with, life becomes much less stressful and personal change is far easier to accomplish when we’re free from the internal resistance of negative judgement.

The only thing we never get enough of is love;

and the only thing we never give enough of is love.

-???????Henry Miller

In ancient times, it was often repeated that if you seek to fill your heart with the joy and power of love, you must learn to give it freely to those whom you meet along life’s pathway. This advice is as valid today as it always has been. When you express the power of your love and acceptance without seeking anything in return, love will flow unhindered into your life and you’ll experience a degree of freedom and fulfilment that might easily take your breath away with its purity and intensity. Try it today and discover what might’ve been missing in your life up until this point.

The most precious gift we can offer anyone is our attention. When mindfulness embraces those we love, they will bloom like flowers.

-Thich Nhat Hanh
