The Power of Living Debt-Free

As a young teen, I witnessed a scene that left a lasting impression on me: bank recovery agents knocking on my neighbors' doors to collect on credit debts. The anxiety and fear etched on the faces of those families were daunting. It was in that moment I made a decision that would shape my life—I vowed to remain debt-free.
Growing up, my Dad was my role model in this commitment. As the sole breadwinner for our family of five, he never borrowed money. He prioritized providing us with a quality education, and as a first-generation graduate, I owe much of my success to his steadfast principles. His example taught me that financial responsibility is not just a personal choice; it’s a legacy.
In the early years of my marriage, we often lived paycheck to paycheck. I still remember those moments when we would check our bank account on the last day of the month, sometimes with just $10 left. Despite the uncertainty, we learned to embrace a mindset of gratitude and generosity. In fact, some of our most fulfilling moments came during times of unemployment—seasons when we discovered the joy of giving, even when our own financial situation was precarious.
Today, after three layoffs and the joy of raising three wonderful boys, I can confidently say that our commitment to living debt-free has transformed our lives. Embracing a debt-free lifestyle (no creditcards, bankloans or personal borrowing) has not only provided us with financial security but has also empowered us to make bold career decisions. When you aren’t tethered to debt, you can leave toxic work environments and pursue opportunities that truly align with your values and passions.
Proverbs 22:7 reminds us, "The borrower is slave to the lender." This wisdom has served as a guiding principle for me, reinforcing the importance of avoiding debt. Similarly, Proverbs 21:20 teaches that "Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man's dwelling, but a foolish man devours it."
This has encouraged me to cherish what we have, particularly during challenging times, reminding me that true wealth isn’t just about money—it’s about peace, safety, and the ability to enjoy life’s simple pleasures.
