The power of joy in supporting your resilience

I was listening to a podcast this week which highlighted how joy helps us become more resilient.

Our capacity grows when we experience joy.

This might comes in various forms and one of them is awe.

I was staring at the sky this week. When there are fluffy white clouds on a warm, sunny day, simply watching them as they drift and melt away is a source of wonder.

It isn't usually more than a few seconds before I see birds whether it is high flying swifts or crows going about their business.

They embody that freedom and simply wondering what they are doing can help detach from worldly cares and gain perspective as my mind starts to drift away.

This builds capacity, a sort of mental space where today's worries reduce in size as the overall space expands. There is a mental unfocussing which allows me to take much more in.

In this state it is easier to see what had been previously been out of sight. That might be a solution, a way forward or just a healthier perspective.

Engaging our emotions in this way builds capacity. Builds resilience.

As we engage our hearts and relax the habitual, intellectual dominant way of being. The way which demands answers, plans and hates uncertainty. The way of being which has limited emotional forms of expression which include the unhelpful modes such as anxiety and judgement.

Take a few moments when the opportunity arises to look at the sky, wonder about the life of birds and clouds.

This isn't an indulgence.

This IS life. This IS living.

If you would like to allow your natural resilience to emerge and use your emotions constructively this is best done through working with current challenges. Book time with me to discuss this here .
