The Power of Introversion: How Introverted Leaders Thrive

Many people incorrectly associate introversion with being unfriendly, which leads many leaders who display introverted traits to avoid identifying as introverts. It's crucial to dispel these misconceptions and recognize that introversion does not equate to a lack of friendliness or leadership capability.

Introversion and extroversion refer to how individuals derive energy rather than indicating their sociability or feelings toward others. Extroverts gain energy from interacting with people and often process their thoughts by talking them out. They tend to respond immediately when asked a question.

Conversely, introverts gain energy from solitary activities and need time alone to reflect on their thoughts. While they can provide an immediate answer when questioned, they require time to process and articulate their response fully. Ideally, introverts should communicate their need for a few minutes, or longer if necessary, to formulate a thoughtful answer. Many introverts also prefer to write out their responses, as it allows them to refine and edit their thoughts before sharing them with others.

Understanding your preference for introversion or extroversion is crucial as it determines how you gain and lose energy. While some people fall in the middle and exhibit traits of both introversion and extroversion, most still have a preferred side. However, those who truly fall in the middle must recognize that they require both introverted and extroverted activities to energize themselves. It's not necessary to engage in both activities every time your energy runs low, but neglecting either side may leave you feeling less energized, even after spending a long time trying to recharge.

Here are some steps introverts can take to re-energize themselves to ensure success throughout their work days.

When scheduling your meetings, it's important to consider your energy levels.

If possible, try to set your meetings for the time when you feel most energized and alert. Engaging in activities that do not align with your natural energy patterns can be draining. Meetings, in particular, have the potential to deplete your energy reserves. You'll be better equipped to think clearly, actively participate, and engage effectively with others by scheduling them during your peak energy periods. This approach can help you maximise your meetings and optimize your overall productivity.

Introverts often require time to process their thoughts before effectively communicating.

Therefore, introverts must prepare adequately in advance when approaching a challenging or important conversation. This preparation allows introverts to gather their thoughts, consider their points, and approach the conversation confidently and clearly.

Let them know that you are taking a moment to think.

When conversing with your colleagues and faced with a question that requires thoughtful consideration, it's important to communicate to them that you are taking a moment to think through the question before responding. If you don't do this and remain silent while processing the question, the other person may draw incorrect conclusions. This could give the impression that you are disinterested or don't know the answer. Therefore, it's beneficial to verbalize your thought process to ensure that others understand that you are actively considering their question.

Establishing the habit of requesting information before meetings is important whenever possible.

Regardless of whether you're the only one doing so, this practice is essential to your success strategy. By obtaining information ahead of time, you'll have the opportunity to review it and take notes on any questions you want to ask or comments you plan to make. This preparation will enable you to engage in the discussion actively. While obtaining information in advance may not always be feasible, it's entirely within your rights to request it as a standard practice. Over time, you may discover that others recognize the value of this approach and begin to proactively share information before meetings, as there's a good chance that you're not the only introvert in your organization.

Attend social gatherings and network with confidence.

Develop the confidence to attend social gatherings such as cocktail parties and networking events without fundamentally changing who you are. Instead, focus on adopting specific strategies to enable you to navigate these situations easily and successfully.

  • First. before attending the event, it's important to take some time to re-energize yourself. This could involve getting some rest, relaxing, or practising mindfulness to ensure you feel refreshed and ready to participate fully.
  • Secondly, when you're at an event, it's important to identify some key individuals you want to greet and engage in short but meaningful conversations with. Your primary goal during these interactions should be to inquire about the other person's well-being and show genuine interest in their lives. If you encounter new acquaintances, make an effort to get to know them by asking about their work or any other hobbies or interests they may have. It's equally important to be ready to reciprocate and answer similar questions about yourself. Once you've had a few exchanges, it's completely acceptable to excuse yourself and move on to converse with others gracefully, perhaps those you are more familiar with.
  • Third, one important aspect to remember is to have a few interesting topics that you can use to initiate a conversation if needed. It's always helpful to prepare some conversation starters in case the discussion needs a little nudge.
  • Lastly, it's important to remember that you don't have to feel obligated to stay until the end of the event. Once you've greeted the key individuals you need to connect with, take the time to listen to any Keynote speeches that may contain important information. After that, feel free to depart from the event at your convenience. There's no need to pretend to be the life of the party or to force yourself to have fun. You can engage quietly with others, and if it's a workday, you have a perfect excuse to leave by explaining that it's been a long day for you. When you decide to leave, be sure to bid farewell to the host or hostess. This way, you can feel comfortable exiting the event.

Plan how you will maintain your energy throughout the day.

Developing a plan to maintain energy levels throughout the day is crucial for productivity and overall well-being. Start by establishing a morning routine that helps you kickstart the day with energy. As you engage in extroverted activities and feel your energy depleting, take steps to re-energize yourself. Managing your energy is vital for accomplishing daily tasks effectively. Ultimately, it's important to transition from work to home by clearing your mind, re-energizing, and creating a positive mindset before interacting with your family. This ensures that you can be fully present for your loved ones and enjoy your home activities without being preoccupied with work-related concerns.

Recognizing and embracing introversion as a valuable trait is crucial for leaders in creating an inclusive and diverse work environment. It's important for leaders to acknowledge the unique strengths and needs that they have as introverted individuals. They also need to actively promote open communication, flexibility in meeting schedules, and respect for different working styles. By doing so, leaders can foster an environment where both introverted and extroverted team members can thrive and contribute effectively, ultimately leading to the success of the team as a whole.
