The Power of Interdependence
Cobwebs help us visualize the concept of interdependence.

The Power of Interdependence

We hear the term interdependence a lot. Simply put, interdependence means that changing in one part of the system will impact change in another part. Nature is structured as a network of connections and relationships where nothing is separate. Over time these relationships evolve into interdependence.

Think of interdependence like a spider web. When a fly gets caught in the web, its attempts to break free shake the entire web. That ripple of movement, which is synonymous with change within our organizations, starts with one small fly. When we lead from a networked, interdependent framework, we look for those small changes that can optimize the connections - and relationships - within the system. That's how leaders use an interdependent mindset to achieve forward momentum within their organizations.

Learning How to Optimize Interdependence

Nature is designed to be an interdependent system. The?more diverse our ecosystems,?the more generous they become.?This is?because they flow with and optimize interdependence instead of ignoring these connections or worse, defending separation.??When we think of interdependence as a leader, we might be tempted to see it as a constraint to individual freedom.?But Nature doesn’t see it that way, and neither should we. Interdependence builds the collective resilience of any system (eco- or otherwise) strengthening our organizations and the individuals who thrive within them.

When a leader assumes interdependence, key shifts in their priorities occur:??

  • Mutually beneficial relationships are encouraged and nurtured.
  • Integration and alignment with the mission replace silos.
  • An abundance of cooperation and information sharing.
  • Diversity of opinion that is embraced.
  • Meetings focused on topics that feed the whole organization, not just one area or team member.

The Interdependent System Will Help You - If You Let It

When I am working with a client organization, I start with the assumption that all systems are at their core, interdependent, living systems. I know that change in one part of the system will affect change elsewhere, so the challenge becomes finding the place to influence, making a change, and understanding the resulting flow of movement. Doing that requires the ability to see, understand, and appreciate the relationships within the system - the dynamics between people, the organizational structure and processes, and how culture will shape individual and collective responses.

Remember, the living interdependent system will always help us achieve the changes we seek. Even the smallest action - that one small fly - can lead us to the highest possible outcome.
