The Power Of Inspiration

We've had a very inspiring time over the last few weeks visiting the local artists who were kind enough to make themselves available for Norfolk Open Studios. I've always described myself as more imaginative than creative, however talking to artists who are putting themselves and their work out there has made it clear how creativity comes in so many different forms, it's not just about being able to draw or paint.
Inspiration is important in all areas of life as it is the spark that helps us to consider what might be possible, whether being motivated to start a project for its own sake or helping us to find the inner strength for an upcoming task.
If you're feeling a bit stuck, here are a few ideas for generating inspiration:
Do Something New
We can lack motivation when we find our lives taken over by routine. Autopilot can sometimes be helpful (remember how frustrating it is when stress causes us to have to think through the steps of basic tasks), but it can also lead to a lack of intellectual stimulation which, if left to become the norm, can perpetuate a lack of drive and, ultimately, resistance to change.
Stepping out of our comfort zone helps to challenge our body and brain, breaking the routine and giving us the opportunity to take on new perspectives. Even tiny changes such as discovering a new route to work or to the shops can break us out of monotony, but ideally try something that takes effort, for example learning a new skill, reading or going for a walk (instead of sitting down in front of the TV) or finally trying out that hobby you used to talk about.
Trying new things is integral to personal development, but remember it doesn't have to change the world, just your current routine!

Document Your Ideas
I'm not one for mood boards, but I know quite a few people who like to create a working record of what inspires them. This is normally in the form of a collage, with cut-outs of inspiring and motivating text and images. If you don't have the space at home for a physical board, platforms such as Canva allow you to create and develop visual content.
If a visual representation isn't for you, try keeping a notebook handy for when an inspiring thought appears that you might want to develop. Good ideas can come and go, so being able to capture that word, phrase or sketch can help start to make your ideas tangible. Similarly, starting a journal might help you to understand where your barriers to inspiration might be.
Get Outdoors
According to askthescientists.com, being outdoors can reduce blood pressure, lower heart rate, and decrease cortisol levels - and this is without even adding exercise to the mix.
Nature's green has a harmonising effect on the eye which can inspire creative thinking, helping us to explore a different outlook. Add in a mood-boosting walk and inspiring thoughts will be flowing in no time!
