The power of innovation and community engagement in the fight to end TB

One of the most gratifying parts of my job is having the opportunity to meet local experts and communities who are quite literally solving the most vexing of global health challenges.?

?Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation/Ilan Godfrey

Recently, I met with Helen Rees , Lee Fairlie , and the incredible team at Wits RHI in Johannesburg, South Africa – a country with one of the highest TB incidence rates in the world. Notably, Wits RHI is one of the first clinical trial sites to begin dosing participants with TB vaccine candidate M72 on the pivotal Phase 3 clinical trial, which, if proven effective, will be the first new TB vaccine in 100 years. Considering that TB remains the top global infectious disease killer – mercilessly preying on the most vulnerable people – the global community is long overdue for a safe and effective vaccine.

Getting to this stage takes years – if not decades – of relentless scientific rigor. Every clinical trial site needs to be expertly staffed, trained, and prepared to enroll trial participants. Site staff are integral to the overall success of any trial site. Pictured above are pharmacists Saayida and Nyasha, who are inspecting the M72 vaccine kits for quality control.??

Effective community engagement is the cornerstone of research in and for the communities we serve. Local community leaders – like Sanele - play a vital role in helping us understand community needs and perspectives and help the community understand TB, vaccines, and the role research plays in developing new tools to save lives. Community Advisory Boards represent their communities and ensure transparency and open communication throughout the research process.?

The start of the M72 Phase 3 clinical trial marks a decisive moment in the fight to end TB. Collectively, we must continue to move with urgency to develop and equitably deliver innovative tools with the potential to transform the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of TB. By leveraging local expertise, partnership, and leadership, we can have a future without TB.

So much can be achieved if only someone would have open the doors to the LISTENING TO UNDERSTAND PORTAL ?? ... Times have changed dramatically in the last 5 years, yet Education, Media and Social Connections have been lugging behind . Our Societies are even more divided, Media Transparency at the point Zero, Education is at it's worst..... Let's stop patronising people, especially the Youth and Kids. Half of the World's Population is under the age of 20 and they are well informed, smart, eager to protect their planet, create a more just world, support the less fortunate and serve their community... Global Community at every level... UNICEF UNDP UN etc are wasting billions of dollars in unnecessary administration and really not being able to implement the changes and challenges that are there to be dealt with. WE NEED RE-INVENT... Education, Leadership, Social Communication, Media and so on ! Would anyone like to hear US!???? The Global Youth and Kids! Stop Politicising everything. How about Intercultural Dialogue, Diversity, Inclusion, Outreaching, Sharing The Heritage and Letting in some sunshine and Give the Kids Some Hope, Light and Above All, RESPECT, TRUST AND THE VOICE ?? ... https://youtu.be/9U_-chnMM8k?feature=shared

Good morning president Trevor Mundel my name is Voltaire Bokota, I live in the Democratic Republic of Congo and I graduated in medicine at the University of Kisangani. All the honor is for me to come here to submit a question regarding the mechanisms of prevention and eradication of tuberculosis especially in countries classified in the low level category (RD Congo for example) 1 ° Is there no way that scientists and experts would can define the criteria for predilection of contamination for tuberculosis? In order to allow the providers not to wait after many months to think about TB then the person has already infected many people 2 ° Scaling a continuous alert program (CAP) Cases + coupled a digital mapping to strengthen monitoring in areas. strong Prevalence 3 ° Strengthening a TB Case Detection Approach Based on a Maladis-TB Combined Test Model In the event of high preferred thresholds, taking into account, especially of fever delays and PCA data So I'm just looking how to share my inkling if this can contribute to the fight against tuberculosis thank you
