The power & importance of HOW
As I go through end of year reviews with my team, I am now and as always, reflecting on the ‘HOW’. So often our objectives and targets are all about ‘what’ was done, this is important of course, but I also like to think about HOW we achieved our targets, HOW we treated our customers, employees and partners along the way, HOW we behaved and worked together as a team, HOW we navigated difficult and tense situations and HOW we can improve going forward.
I was very lucky to be given an education that focused on the key values of honesty and hard work, the HOW, and I was never pushed to only achieve. I also had the chance to work for Nokia, for 11 years, in an environment where health and safety and ethics and compliance were never ever compromised for the sake of achieving a target, for the sake of the ‘what’… never! I remember vividly saying no to business, deals and actions that were against these values and of course my own. ?And I was never challenged or penalised for it.
?I want to continue to drive the importance of the HOW in BAI; there is no long-term value creation or success without it. Moreover, as a Neutral Host, HOW has to be part of our DNA, we must be fair in the way we treat our customers. It does not mean that all customers will be treated the same, they all have very different requirements, but I want to be able to state confidently that they have been treated fairly. I do believe that if we don’t focus on the HOW the success of the Neutral Host model will stall.

On LinkedIn, and social media in general, the posts and stories are about the ‘what’. What you have achieved, what deals you have signed, what success you have had but rarely about HOW. I would even argue that sometimes it is about the ‘what’ at all costs. Call me a dreamer but I strongly believe that success can be achieved without any compromise on the HOW. I would even go as far as stating that there is little chance of long-term success without it.?
?For me, the HOW is just as important as the ‘what’.

2 年I’d totally agree and be so bold as to go one step further and ensure that a team are always that HOW they operate is driven by knowing WHY they are doing ‘this’ and not just following process/instruction!
