The Power and Impact of Dramas in the Subcontinent and How to Improve

I recently saw video on YouTube which sparked an interest in me, and after researching and listening to various perspectives, I have some thoughts on the topic of dramas produced in the vibrant and colorful subcontinent. These productions, from small community plays to large televised shows, have long been a means of entertainment, education, and social commentary, connecting with communities and celebrating culture and tradition while exploring contemporary issues and challenges. However, while dramas have many positive effects, they are also perpetuating harmful stereotypes, promoting unhealthy behaviors, and spreading misinformation.

Gender roles in these subcontinental dramas are often portrayed with a traditional bias, with women expected to embody a passive, caring demeanor and remain concealed from view, while other depictions show women as vivacious and outspoken but detached from cultural roots and rebellious against established norms. This divisive portrayal is creating a chasm, restricting prospects for women and leaving them with a sense of fragmentation. Love, romance, and marriage are also idealized, leading to unrealistic expectations and disappointment, particularly for girls, as they realize that real-life relationships do not match those seen on screen.

The most significant problem with these dramas is the normalization of abuse, including domestic violence, emotional manipulation, and abusive behavior of all sizes, contributing to a culture of violence and abuse that cannot be ignored. To improve the impact of these dramas on our lives, particularly for girls, women, and mothers, who are the most affected, we must focus on reducing harmful content and promoting positive messages, showcasing a wider range of experiences and diverse perspectives.

To unleash the full potential of dramas in the subcontinent, we must broaden their horizons, presenting a kaleidoscope of experiences and viewpoints. The key lies in enriching the skills of actors, writers, and directors, equipping them with the understanding of the profound influence they wield. This would enable them to craft productions that are socially responsible and promote positivity, creating strong and confident characters that inspire and uplift. Through such efforts, we can bestow upon our youth, girls, women, and mothers the chance to attain emotional stability and agility and to flourish in life's endeavors.

Dramas have the power to shape the lives of those who watch them, particularly the young and impressionable. By introducing characters that serve as positive role models, showcasing their strength, confidence, and compassion, dramas can galvanize these groups into becoming more active and involved members of their communities. They can also foster emotional, physical, and mental growth, providing viewers with an outlet for their emotions, an opportunity to build resilience, and a means of self-care, serving as a soothing balm, energizing and renewing the spirit, readying one to face life's challenges with newfound vigor.

As we explore the potential of dramas in the subcontinent, it is essential to remember their ability to promote positive change in our society. By harnessing their power to inspire, educate, and uplift, we can create a brighter and more inclusive future for all. It is our responsibility to ensure that these productions promote positive change and not negative traumas, creating productions that inspire, uplift, and educate our society while giving our youth the opportunity to live a life of propriety.
