Power to the imagination - Open Day at the OCC
The Open Days at the Onassis Cultural Centre have become a regular fixture of the Athenian new music scene. Once a year the whole building opens up to the public and to music of the 20th century that focuses on a particular theme that the audience and the musicians involved are invited to (re) discover. The initiative started several years ago with a Musicircus in honor of John Cage and since then we have explored the heritage of Stockhausen, Berio, Kagel, the various strands of minimalism and the New York School.
This year, anniversaire oblige, we are going to explore the music that defined the 1968 era, ranging from engaged composers such as Luigi Nono and Louis Andriessen, experimental works by Cornelius Cardew, compositions by Xenakis and Christou, protest songs by Claude Nougaro, the Grateful Dead, excerpts from an opera from Cultural Revolution period China and much much more. Alongside the music, films and tapes complete the picture of one of the most fascinating periods in recent history and invite us to think about where we are today.
The performers represent a large part of the new music scene in Greece and the Open Days are a great opportunity for all of us, audiences and musicians to participate in an informal and fun immersion in the sounds that define our times.
Sunday, March 4th. Entrance is free from 16.30 to 20.30 and there is a EUR 3-5 admission fee for the evening concert in the main stage. The event is super child-friendly.
