A growing body of research shows the need to connect socially with others is as essential as our need for food, water, and shelter, writes UCLA professor Matthew Lieberman in his book,?Social: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Connect.
Even though it seems we are constantly connecting thanks to social media and smartphones, that notion couldn’t be further from the truth. According to a recent article in the New York Times, we are experiencing “a crisis of human connection” Fifty-four percent of American adults report that not a single person knows them well, and a third feel isolated.
We may believe that what we want is money, power, celebrity, beauty, everlasting youth, or a new automobile, yet, the need to belong, to be accepted by others, to connect with others, and to be loved is the root of desire.
Just because we are connected does not mean we are connecting.?
Human connection is a bond between people. Two or more people interact, and each feels valued, heard, and emotionally understood. There’s no judgment. Empathy and compassion are exhibited.
