The Power of Grounding, The Body Electric & The Sun
Earthing: The Missing Link to Health
“There may be nothing more basic or universal for healing people than Earthing. Getting reconnected to the Earth should be the new human vocation.”
–– Jed Diamond, PhD.
The simplicity of good health might surprise you, and it always goes back to Nature. She makes no mistakes. Have you ever noticed a subtle, pleasant feeling when you walk barefoot on the grass or on the beach?
When we stand on the ground, barefoot, or swim in the ocean, we absorb energy into our bodies to recharge our cells, which also carry the negative charge that Earth does. Earthing has been scientifically proven to reduce inflammation and even eliminate it. Peer-viewed medical literature supports this.
Here we will cover:
When I was first told about this concept, I effectively walked in the opposite direction, but my body remained where it was. It wasn’t until I read the book Earthing, recommended by a good friend, that my view changed entirely, and I wrote about it in my last book, The Vitality Secret, in 2016. About two years ago, a friend contacted me to tell me her parents had read my book, that they’d bought grounding sheets, and that her mother’s blood sugars had improved, and her dad′s sleep had improved, as well as his overall energy. I love hearing reports like this. Sometimes, something so simple can make a profound difference. Health need not be complicated.
The ground is a sea of negatively charged electrons, as is the ocean, lakes, and rivers (providing they’re not polluted). This is factual. And human beings are electrical. (Have you ever felt your own energy field? It’s very cool.) Our entire nervous system is built with electrical signals and pulses of energy. The brain is made up of about one hundred billion neurons, or nerve cells. The heart keeps pumping due to a small electrical current generated by the group of muscle cells in the walls of the heart. Every time we move a muscle, that is generated by electrical signals from the brain.
Just like we need oxygen, water, and nutrients for our cells to thrive (as well as the need to eliminate waste and also to sleep), and sunlight (the ultimate nutrient), we also need electrical energy from the ground to charge up our cells and our “body electric.” Clint Ober, the co-author of Earthing, argues that when we’re connected to the ground, we cannot have inflammation in our bodies.
Remember our cells are electrically charged. Connecting to the ground helps keep them remain negatively charged.??
The challenge is, for the most part, that we are disconnected from the ground. What’s been missing for some time in our lives is the healing energy that we receive from the Earth. Going back to ancestral times, we’d be connected to the ground when we walked about barefoot or on leather soles. Our ancestors would be connected to the ground when they slept. Today, we’re disconnected from the ground as we wear plastic and rubber soles on our feet all the time and sleep nowhere near the ground.

Simply put, we need to be connected to the ground so we can absorb the electrons from the Earth. These electrons have profound healing abilities. The originator of this treatment, and one of the authors of Earthing, experienced considerable opposition to this theory, as you might imagine. So, he started to conduct his own experiments and, after a few years, started to gain the interest of the scientific community and doctors. He began to connect people to the Earth while sleeping, in the form of electrically conducted sheets that were connected to the ground, or via the earth terminal in the plug socket. The results have been, and continue to be, phenomenal.
The authors documented over a 15-year period all sorts of illnesses and diseases that were improved or even reversed by sleeping grounded. These included insomnia, sleep apnea, jet lag, Type-2 diabetes, wounds that weren’t previously healing, asthma, eczema, hormones normalized, acute inflammation and, last but not least, chronic inflammation. Patients’ blood pressure normalized, inflammatory markers improved, cholesterol levels were improved as well. The greatest takeaway I’ve had from it is how chronic inflammation can be reversed through earthing. Here is a quote from the book, Earthing:
“The moment your foot touches the Earth, or you connect to the Earth through a wire, your physiology changes. An immediate normalization begins. And an anti-inflammatory switch is turned on.” People stay inflamed because they never connect with the Earth, the source of free electrons, which can neutralize the free radicals in the body that cause disease and cellular destruction.”
There are many peer-reviewed studies on the effects of earthing, particularly related to its anti-inflammatory abilities. Below are three of them, in case you’re interested:
Grounding and Reduction of Inflammation and Inflammatory Conditions
The simplest way to Earth yourself is to walk around barefoot on the grass, on soil, or on the beach. Notice the pleasurable feeling. This is the energy from the Earth (as well as the pleasurable feeling to the touch) traveling through your entire body, energizing you. Another great way to Earth yourself is to swim in natural waters — the sea/ocean, or rivers and lakes. Water is one of the best conductors of electricity, and your whole body is being earthed while in the water.
Finally, sleeping grounded (or ‘Earthed’) with the use of grounding sheets has been proven time and again to be very effective for reducing inflammation and, therefore, alleviating symptoms of many illnesses associated with it. You can also ground while you’re sitting at your desk or sitting on the sofa. It's effortless, too. Grounding yoga mats are also available as well as several other grounding devices.
I’d highly recommend watching the Earthing documentary that I feature on my website. And consider investing in grounding sheets and walking barefoot whenever you can — preferably while also getting sunlight! That is a magical combination, though easier said than done, if you’re not in a warm climate. That said, even if it’s cold, try walking on the soil????? barefoot. I did this in Big Bear with snow outside this year — it’s doable.
