The Power of a Great Mentor
Almost everyday I think about something my mentor has said to me in the course of the 8 years we worked together. He is a great leader of men, a visionary and he challenged me to succeed and held me accountable. He is a quirky guy, old fashion and set in his ways, but he always was able to make his point and rally others to the cause. Each time I get into a negotiation, I always remember his advice, never close the other parties pocket. Think about what they are trying to achieve and what you need to achieve and look for ways to win/win. Many times when I watched him in action, I was amazed at the things people would do for him, some that cost, and many that didn't and they did it for him with a smile on their faces and genuine heartfelt thanks.
He wasn't an easy guy to work for, he demanded dedication, and action, had lofty goals and expected results, surprise! He was able to get all of that and more from me. As the years go by, I often thing about him at certain times when I come across a fork in the road and think about what he would do, and it was usually the road less traveled by others. One of his great sayings about negotiation was " most pants have 4 pockets, take a little from each one. When dealing with a supplier he was able to get them to spend more then they wanted to, but it came from several areas making the sting less painful. Price was always an issue,as was rebates, but advertising in our magazine, sponsoring our meetings, contributing to advertising giveaways, or providing door prizes, there was always one more thing they could participate in if they choose to.
