The Power of Gratitude in Transforming Workplace Culture

The Power of Gratitude in Transforming Workplace Culture

In today’s fast-paced work environments, the importance of a positive workplace culture is of vital importance. Workplace culture significantly impacts both the psychological wellbeing of employees, and the financial health of an organisation. One key element that can drive positive transformation in workplace culture is the attribute of gratitude.

Gratitude holds power. It comes with many benefits from improved morale and productivity, to a positive environment filled with appreciation and recognition. Creating a more positive, engaged, and high-performing workforce is a priority of any thriving business’s agenda.

The Impact of Poor Workplace Cultures

Research has consistently shown that toxic workplace cultures can lead to severe negative outcomes for individuals. These include increased stress levels, higher absenteeism, lower productivity and even elevated rates of employee turnover. According to a study published in the Harvard Business Review, negative workplace behaviours, such as bullying and harassment both detrimental to employee wellbeing and can also cost organisations millions in lost productivity and turnover costs.

Poor workplace cultures contribute to a lack of psychological safety, which is essential for employees to feel secure and valued. The absence of this safety can lead to a decrease in innovative thinking and collaboration, further affecting the organisation's bottom line. For example, the American Psychological Association reports that workplace stress costs the U.S. economy more than $500 billion annually, with much of this stress stemming from poor management and negative workplace environments.

A report from Safe Work Australia highlights that mental health conditions accounted for 9% of all serious workers’ compensation claims during 2021 and 2022, representing a 36.9% increase since the 2017-2018 period.

These statistics highlight the need for organisations to foster positive workplace cultures to enhance employee well-being and organisational performance.

The Role of Gratitude in Enhancing Workplace Culture

Gratitude, as a core attribute, has been extensively studied in positive psychology and is known to have profound effects on mental health and organisational culture. Gratitude involves recognising and appreciating the positive aspects of one’s work and the contributions of colleagues. Studies have shown that practicing gratitude can reduce stress, improve relationships, and enhance overall wellbeing.

A study by Emmons and McCullough found that individuals who regularly practiced gratitude reported higher levels of alertness, enthusiasm, and energy. These benefits can extend to the workplace, where gratitude can foster a sense of belonging and mutual respect among employees. When leaders express gratitude, it can cascade down the organisational hierarchy, creating a more supportive and collaborative environment.

Hacia Atherton, CPA, MAPP , CEO and Founder of Empowered Women In Trades (EWIT) Group, emphasises the transformative power of gratitude. She reflects on an inspiring encounter: "Spending time with Vince Vaughn was truly inspiring. His genuine attitude of gratitude towards life and his unwavering curiosity about others reminded me of the power of humility and kindness. Vince's ability to stay grounded while achieving so much is a testament to his character and I deeply admire his perspective on life”.

It is vital to use the resources available to us and learn from those around us to expand our perspectives and enhance our own personal growth.??

Addressing Workplace Issues Through Gratitude

Workplace bullying and harassment are serious issues that undermine employee morale and productivity. Implementing a culture of gratitude can be a powerful antidote to these problems. By encouraging employees to express appreciation and recognise each other’s contributions, organisations can reduce negative behaviours and promote a positive and inclusive work environment.

Something as simple as gratitude can also play a crucial role in conflict resolution and stress management. When employees feel valued and appreciated, they are more likely to engage in constructive communication and problem-solving. This can lead to a reduction in workplace conflicts and a more harmonious work environment.

Gratitude is a powerful approach to workplace relationships, because when we verbalize our appreciation and our grateful insights for what is, rather than harping on what is not, we put positive energy into the workplace. Although workplace bullying and harassment are more serious issues that I believe we need a different set of tools for, sharing #gratitude with each other at work can definitely improve culture, possibly reducing or preventing conflict from getting to that point.
