THIS IS MY FAVOURITE WATCH… (and it’s not even mine!)
Over the last few years I’ve built up a small collection of watches.
Nothing too crazy, but a few nice pieces that have caught my eye and got me to part with a fair few quid.
So, what makes THIS one so special?
It’s not the most expensive.
It’s also not the first one I bought.
In fact, it’s not even mine!
The reason it means more to me that all the others?
I recently bought it for my Dad, for his 70th birthday.
A bit about my Dad…
He’s not materialistic in any way.
He lives a simple life in a little 3-bed house up north, which cost less than most brand new cars!
But in August me, Nat, and the kids went to visit him for his 70th birthday, and I wanted to treat him to something special.
So after we’d done the usual:
“What do you want for your birthday?”...“I don’t need anything” debate…
I finally convinced him to let me treat him to something.
He’d always told me about a watch he’d owned years ago, that had got ‘lost in a move’. At least that’s what he told me. He probably pawned it for some extra cash at some point when he ran out!
Anyway, we went into town and looked around a few places.
He said he wanted something simple, but classic.
He tried on a few, but nothing really stood out.
Then, in the window of a tiny boutique jewellers, we saw this beautiful Omega 1965 Speedmaster Automatic.
When he tried it on, his face said it all.
He loved it.
And so, I loved it.
I whipped my card out and paid for it (with a bit of hesitation, it has to be said!)
As we walked away from the shop he put his arm around me, and started to say thank you.
When he tried to explain just how much it meant to him, we shared a moment I’ll never forget.
His voice started to crack. And a few seconds later, he started to cry.
I’m 36 years old, and that’s the first time I’ve EVER seen my Dad cry.
I grabbed him and hugged him in the street, and held on for what seemed like an eternity.
I don’t think for a minute that material things bring true happiness.
But I’d have gladly paid ten times what I paid for that watch, just for that special moment.
He’s 70 now, and of course, he won’t be around forever.
But that moment will.
So - let me ask you a question:
What could you do today, to show someone you care about, just how special they are?
Hopefully this story serves as a little reminder for you, to create more magic moments with your loved ones.
