The power of genuine leadership: Fostering inclusivity and selflessness?
Reynold Tetzlaff, FCPA, CPA
Vice-Chair and Managing Partner Alberta & Prairies Region
True influence, cultivated to empower others, is built on trust, honesty, and mutual respect. Unlike power, which can be given or taken, influence is earned over time. It has the potential to positively impact lives for generations, serving as an enduring example of wise leadership.?
Gone are the days when leadership was only about driving profits or managing teams. In today’s dynamic business landscape, creating a culture that fosters authenticity, inclusivity and selflessness is necessary.?
As leaders, we must navigate the delicate balance to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed.?
Authentic leadership: Leading with integrity?
Authentic leadership begins with self-awareness and a commitment to lead with integrity. It’s about being true to your values, communicating transparently and building trust within your team. Authentic leaders are bold enough to show vulnerability and humble?enough to admit mistakes and seek feedback. Such openness creates an environment where team members feel valued, heard and seen.?
In practice, authenticity involves continuous self-reflection and a willingness to adapt. It means making decisions that align with your personal and organizational values, even when difficult.?
Authentic leaders inspire their teams through their words and actions, setting a standard for ethical behaviour and integrity.?
The most influential leaders I met throughout my journey with PwC Canada, whether in the firm or with clients, are authentic. Their actions consistently align with their promises.?
Inclusive leadership: valuing inclusion and diversity??
Inclusive leadership helps foster a culture where diverse perspectives are welcomed, encouraged, sought after, and valued. This practice upholds the dignity of every employee, recognizing them for their abilities and contributions, rather than defining them by perceived differences. PwC Canada's commitment to inclusion reflects its dedication to creating a workplace where diversity is not just celebrated, but integral to the fabric of the organization, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to thrive and contribute.?
An inclusive leader recognizes that diversity—in gender, race, ability, thought, and experience—enhances creativity and innovation.?
Selfless leadership: Putting your team first?
Selfless leadership is about prioritizing the needs of the team over individual ambitions. It involves being genuinely invested in the growth and well-being of others. ?
This approach requires empathy, patience and a genuine desire to help others succeed. It means being available to mentor and coach, recognizing the contributions of each team member, and provide them with opportunities for professional development and growth. ?
The role of humour and humility?
Leaders should also understand the power of humour and humility in creating a positive work environment. Taking the job seriously without taking oneself too seriously can break down barriers and build stronger, more genuine relationships within the team. Humour can diffuse tension, foster a sense of camaraderie and make the workplace more enjoyable and engaging. It shows that leaders are approachable and human, making it easier for team members to connect and communicate openly.?

Inclusive language: The power of "we"?
Language is a powerful tool in leadership. Inclusive leaders use language that fosters a sense of belonging and teamwork. By focusing on "we" rather than "I," leaders emphasize collective effort and shared success. This approach makes team members feel included and reinforces that everyone’s contributions are valuable. Inclusive language promotes unity and helps build a culture where collaboration and mutual support are the norms.?
Balancing meritocracy with inclusivity?
Often seen as the gold standard in hiring and promotion practices, meritocracy?ensures that decisions are made based on skills, performance and qualifications. It also means recognizing and addressing the systemic barriers that can hinder specific individuals from showcasing their talents.?
An inclusive meritocracy acknowledges that equal opportunity is about treating everyone equally and providing the support and resources each person needs to succeed, such as tailored training programs, mentorship opportunities, and accessible workplace accommodations.
Conclusion?
Leadership in the modern era demands a commitment to authenticity, inclusivity and selflessness. By leading with integrity, valuing diversity, and prioritizing our teams' well-being, we can create a workplace where everyone can thrive based on their merits.?
Leaders are responsible for building a culture that recognizes and rewards excellence and ensures that everyone, regardless of their background or abilities, can achieve their full potential.?
They must be of service to those entrusted to them, focusing on helping individuals become better people.?
By embracing these principles, leaders can inspire and empower teams to reach new heights and drive sustainable success for our organizations.?
Don’t?get hung up on how much personal recognition you’ve received. Focus on how you’ve made a difference in other people’s lives. Reflect on how you want your life to be measured in the end and aim to live each day in a way that makes it worth living.?
