The Power of Firsthand Experience: How Science and Compassion Shape Our Future

The Power of Firsthand Experience: How Science and Compassion Shape Our Future

Yesterday, I had the profound privilege of attending the Science Center's student showcase, where middle schoolers presented their projects under the theme of wearable electronics and smart fabric. Two of these projects stood out as they were designed to create musical access for those with physical limitations—a touching endeavor aimed at empowering people through music. Another project featured a sensor to help those with chronic diseases monitor their health.

However, the project that resonated most deeply with me was titled "The People Protector." Three young boys conceived a tool designed to shield people from potential gun threats. Their prototype—a cardboard shield adorned with markers, featuring a plastic horn meant as a defensive tool, and equipped to vibrate and emit intimidating sounds "like a dragon"—was simultaneously innocent and heart-wrenchingly mature. The combination of childlike imagination with the harsh realities they aim to address moved me to tears.

Children should be dreaming of far-off galaxies and magical worlds, not devising plans to protect themselves from gun violence. Yet, this is the reality they face, and it highlights a stark failure on the part of us adults. I commend the First Hand staff for guiding these young minds to tackle such grave issues with creativity and proactive thinking. This program does not just teach children science; it empowers them to envision themselves as the scientists and entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

I would like to extend a special thanks to Maya Heiland , Director of STEM Education Initiatives at University City Science Center , and the rest of her team for their dedication and efforts in making this showcase possible. Their commitment to nurturing young talent and fostering a safe and creative environment for learning is truly commendable.

Watching the parents at the event, pride and fear likely mingled in their hearts—emotions I know all too well as a parent myself. Such events bring into sharp focus the critical importance of engaging with families facing daunting challenges daily—those living in unsafe conditions, struggling with food insecurity, or lacking access to essential services.

This encounter underscores the essence of the Life Science Cares Philadelphia model, which connects our corporate partners directly with organizations that serve under-resourced communities. This firsthand connection is crucial—it motivates us to fund solutions and drive change. While the road to a more equitable society is long, it starts with awareness and a commitment to act.

At Life Science Cares, we recognize the importance of structural change within our own domains—ensuring fair wages, comprehensive healthcare benefits, and prioritizing public services like education, equitable work environments, affordable housing and public transportation. As we continue to support and invest in organizations making a difference in these areas, we are reminded of the powerful impact of empathy and action. Together, we can foster a society where no child has to design their safety equipment, and every family can envision a future filled with hope instead of fear.

Great post, Morgan. And a great University City Science Center program that we’re excited to support here in uCity Square. Such a win for students and the commercial lab partners that act as mentors in the process.

What a beautiful piece Morgan Berman! Thank you for taking the time to listen to the Firsthand students share their ideas. I appreciate your line, "This program does not just teach children science; it empowers them to envision themselves as the scientists and entrepreneurs of tomorrow." We strive to create a space where students feel confident taking risks for the purpose of finding answers so they can ask more questions. And so on!
