The Power to Excel

The Power to Excel

It is not uncommon for me to get asked about how I got my Excel skill set? The honest answer is draws on Occam’s razor and is always enough to make the XL enthusiast’s head drop ever so slightly.  The answer is good old fashioned hard work! See I am not the sharpest tool in the shed – some may say I am quite literally a tool in a shed, however, learning is really a question of time on tools to take the analogy further. Complete your task with Excel, then stand back and ask, 'Now how can I do this task better next time'. Never stop asking that simple question! As you get better and your skill gets you noticed, don’t make the mistake I made (concentrate so hard on skilling up and forget the social aspect of work), build your NETWORK. No one ever got anywhere by themselves and the people you know are most likely kind hearted individuals who want the very best for you. Connect and maintain relationships…. always.

As my website gained more traction in the Excel space, people increasingly wanted to know not so much how I Excel but how do you build a solid web platform that gets 7 figures of traffic to the site.

Well ……. I built my site as a hobby, which means I did what I loved and the site was built for the pure joy of sharing. However, later in the game I did think about the user – what do they want to see, plus, I took a look at the landscape thesmallman was in. What has been done and what are the industry cowboys not prepared to do? There was a gaping hole in the Excel space and I saw an opportunity to fill that hole. I did ….. it worked! Know your industry and build a site that is worthy of people’s time. High quality content, then let time and search engines like Google, do their thing. It will happen. Finally...... enjoy the ride - we only get one life.
