The Power of Empathy in Times of Crisis and Beyond!

Empathy?is a powerful tool that allows people to feel connected and understood. Instead of exhausting yourself with this gift, make sure your?life?is?balanced?to be able to offer it without hesitation or resentment. Use it to empower others—and take care of yourself in the process.

Cognitive empathy?represents our ability to?put ourselves in someone else’s place and see their perspective, without?necessarily engaging with their emotions, so it’s more a rational process.?

Emotional empathy?is when you can?quite literally feel the other person’s emotions?as if you had “caught” the emotions.?

Compassionate empathy?is when we not only understand and feel other people’s situations and emotions?but spontaneously we are ready to help if needed.

Empathetic indicators. Some signs show that you tend to be an empathetic person.

  • Good at really listening to and understanding, what others have to say.
  • People often tell you about their problems.
  • Good at picking up on how other people are feeling.
  • Often think about how other people feel.
  • Other people come to you for advice.
  • Try to help others who are suffering.
  • Good at telling when people aren't being honest.
  • Sometimes feel drained or overwhelmed in social situations.
  • Care deeply about other people.

How Can You Practice Empathy?

  • Talk to new people. Reach out to people in your organisation you have not met before. Set up an online or in-person connection.
  • Walk in another person's shoes for a day. Lead by example and ask to shadow a colleague from another team.
  • Check Your cognitive biases. Cognitive biases are unconscious errors in thinking that arise from problems related to memory, attention, and other mental mistakes. These biases result from our brain’s efforts to simplify the incredibly complex world in which we live.
  • Read More. My favourite book genres are biographies and autobiographies because they allow one to enter the world of other people.
  • Listen. Actively listen to understand. Not just to respond.

  • Health (less stress and less negativity which leads people to be in better shape with stronger immune systems)
  • Leads to a happier life.
  • Improves communication skills.
  • Leads to teamwork.
  • Creates a healthy work environment.
