Power of Emotions

Power of Emotions

You will agree that some emotions give us more happiness & positive energy and some drain out our energy.

Lets take the example of the most popular emotion - Anger. Anger is an emotion that can make it or break it. You may ask me how? If I ask you to imagine an angry person, the image of an shouting / screaming person will come in front of you. Normally, we know that anger is used as a destructive emotion. We also react similarly when we feel angry , ofcourse some people express anger by being completely silent and withdrawn too. The after effect of anger is really awful - for yourself and for people around you. For days and months you can carry that emotion and keep feeling bad. What is the result of this - loss of Productivity, lack of trust, feeling low on energy both on personal and professional life.

Now if I were to tell you that Anger can also be a positive emotion, you may laugh. I am sharing my favourite example.

In 1893, when Gandhiji was pushed out of the first class compartment of the train in South Africa, he was seething with anger. But in the coming decades, he converted that anger into a movement / revolution and the result was Freedom for India. Now that’s Inspiration.

I was very intrigued to find out what happened here? Nothing physical, but everything happened in his mind. He held onto that one thought and started visualising a world where every human had his rights and was treated equally.

There is a famous quote - We are what our beliefs are.

I am sharing the 3 mini secrets that could help transform your anger into positivity

Secret 1 - Identify the Automatic Thoughts

  1. Mostly anger is caused due to our belief that something is unjust, unfair, wrong, disrespected or undeserved.
  2. The inner voice is actually telling us statements that begin with “I must have....”, “I should...” or the “the world should be different...” or “I can’t stand it..”

Secret 2- Find Rationality to your Beliefs

Ask yourself Where is the evidence that you have to always be respected or the world must do as what you say?

Secret 3- Replace old Belief with new Rational

  1. I would have preferred if I were respected
  2. I would have preferred if the world was the way I wanted it to be
  3. I would have preferred that people were always fair with me.

But if it’s not the way it is , but that doesn’t mean I am a horrible person, it just means I need to improve.

Gandhiji would have faced so many hurdles in his life to reach his vision. He could have given up, just sat with his anger and cribbed. But every time he felt angry, he kept converting that emotion into a power that would eventually lead him to his vision.

It takes time to find break through, but it always begins with the first step.

Every step Counts.

Well articulated Radhika. Anger is certainly one of the most negative thoughts that people find it difficult to manage - converting that to a positive energy is a great way to manage that. Nice to see your thoughts around these critical emotional issues which is much more relevant that IQ in a corporate set up.

All our emotions have powers vested in them and it's necessary that we learn how to use the power within each emotion. And this needs to be taught early on to the kids so they become healthier adults

Anger is a very powerful emotion and should not be wasted on petty things.. as you took it rightly, it must act as a fuel for you.
