Recovering from a 12-year binge eating disorder taught me an incredibly important truth about what works - and what’s deceiving folly - for keeping yourself healthfully in a body size that makes you feel vibrant, strong and confident. ? A body size that makes you feel the most like … you.
The truth is this;
Most diet systems, eating programs and detox plans have a unique scientific angle that when fully implemented will work to lose weight and get healthier.
In the 90’s when my eating disorder was raging, I was convinced that unless I strictly followed the Atkins Diet I was screwed and would never lose weight.
(Atkins is very similar to Keto today; an extremely low carbohydrate diet with very little sugars, processed or whole carbs and very high fat / high protein / high dairy.)
I truly believed that following this diet was the only way to live in the slim body size I desperately wanted, and the pursuit of trying to master this perfect nutritional plan contributed to falling victim to many of the very unhealthy eating behaviors you see pictured above.? ??
In my desperate effort to break the chains of eating disorder hell,? I had to figure out a different way of approaching my eating.? A very different way.? And, I especially needed to overhaul my beliefs about food, nutrition and self-care to end the dis-ordered battle I suffered with every single day.
What I learned was profound;
To reach this mecca of eating freedom and daily harmony (and subsequent joy of relating with myself in a much kinder and more joyful way) while still keeping my weight down, I learned that I had to ditch what every well-intended nutritional expert was shouting at the time.
Instead of letting myself get overwhelmed with finding the perfect diet and mastering my carb-protein-fat ratio, I had to do a total 360 to focus on me as the eater, the thinker, the feeler of emotions and the self-care provider coming to the table instead of focusing so heavily on "the food".
This meant I had to let go of the pursuit of nutritional perfectness.? Instead, I needed to gear my precious energy and time toward conquering my own self-sabotaging eating behaviors like the ones pictured above, and I had to examine my other self-care related habits around sleep, exercise and self-connection.
Binge eating every night overrides eating a perfect little salad with steamed chicken the next day for lunch.

Following paleo, keto or weight watchers with religious fervor does not fix a recurring pattern of restricting, emotional eating, boredom eating or avoidance eating.
For most people, if these eating behaviors are present, they show up as a pattern instead of a one-off occurrence.? Honestly, the one-off recurrence is no big deal (we all have them.? totally normal).? But a pattern of overeating 10 out of your 21 meals per week, or the pattern of saying “screw it” and turning to the pleasure of food to soothe anxious emotions is a big deal. It certainly was for me.
So back to my initial statement;
What works to keep yourself healthfully in a body size that makes you feel vibrant, strong and confident - a body size that makes you feel the most like you - is to switch your focus away from finding the perfect nutritional plan and instead focus with open-hearted curiosity to curate the recurring eating, fitness and related self-care behaviors necessary for your healthy body and trim physique.
Yes, healthy eating matters. But it's not the whole story as experts have you believe. You are the rest of the story - your beliefs, habits and emotions you bring to the table.
So my invitation is to summon the courage to acknowledge and eliminate the self-sabotaging and damaging behaviors that are there, right now.? It’s not the easiest path, I know.? But I promise you it is the effective one for long-term results!??
Come on, let’s do it right.
