Types of Electrical Faults in a Power System

The same Applies to a Power Electronics System, where the Types of Electrical Faults Considered are the Same!


Types Of Fault Analysis:

There are Two Main Types of Fault Analysis:

1. Open Circuit Fault:

This occurs due to the Failure of one or more Conductors in Series with Transmission Lines. It Reduces Reliability. Types are: Open “One, Two or Three Conductors” Faults.

2. Short Circuit Fault:

It occurs due to Low Resistance Connection between Phase Conductors or to Ground. They are further divided into Symmetrical & Unsymmetrical Faults based on the Balance of Fault Currents.


How To Detect & Locate Faults?

Common Techniques used are:

1) Protective Relays: The Differential Relays, Distance Relays, and Over-Current Relays Detect Faults based on Abnormal Current/Voltage/Impedance.

2) Circuit Breakers Monitoring: Records Fault inception to accurately Locate the Faulted Section.

3) Fault Indicators: Permanently installed Pinpoints the Exact Location of transient Faults.

4) Infrared Cameras: Detects Hot-Spots from Faults in PE-Switches/Transformers/Cables/etc...

5) etc...

Under Physical inspection we can assume. Being practical we need it's schematic to sort out about major causes.

It looks like electric arc traveled from the connection terminal to the diode lead. Most likely some sort of overload.
