The Power of Digital Signage

The Power of Digital Signage

As I wrapped up a conference in Las Vegas this week, I drove on the outskirts of the strip and was intrigued by all the digital signage. Digital signage isn’t new by any means, but it is definitely in an upward trend. The Sphere was a sight to be seen as its marketing capabilities illuminated the Formula 1 racetrack. I stayed at the MGM Grand where the Red Bull slogan in the lobby enticed visitors to drink caffeine and stay awake as long as possible. I wanted to find out what was powering all of this digital signage.

Sustainable audiovisual design is a hot topic in the AV industry worldwide. The AV industry is looking for ways to build greener AV solutions. I couldn’t help but think, but what about the Sphere? This $2.3 billion venue did not come with solar panels and that is disheartening, especially for a new venue in the middle of the desert. I did some digging and found good news! There is a plan in place to be reviewed by Nevada’s Public Utilities Commission including a 25-year agreement to provide approximately 70% of the Sphere’s energy from a new solar panel facility and a battery storage complex in Northern Nevada. The Sphere has reportedly pledged to purchase certified renewable energy credits to offset its emissions from the creation of electricity. Not only is the Sphere on the forefront of AV design but it is also pushing sustainable design initiatives. In the Las Vegas Review Journal, Sphere officials stated that,?“The Sphere will be one of the most environmentally sustainable entertainment venues ever built.”

I encourage AV designers to follow suit. Venues, commercial buildings, stadiums, etc. should be designed with sustainability in mind. As designers, it is our responsibility to assist our clients with a more sustainable approach. Let’s look at solutions day one with our clients and help lower the overall footprint of our beautiful AV designs.
