The Power Of Demonstration...

Do you know who Elisha Graves Otis is?

Not many do.

But he changed the world in his own little way...

See back in the 1800s the New York skyline looked very different to how it does today.

Back then the buildings were only a maximum of five storeys high.

It wasn't because they didn't know how to build them taller.

It was because the elevators at that time were pretty dangerous.

They would fall pretty regularly.

And experts at the time had figured out if the elevator falls with someone in it from five storeys, they'll likely survive.

But higher than that?

They weren't so sure.

So buildings were set at a certain height for safety reasons.

Otis felt he had the answer though.

He had invented a brake that would stop elevators from falling.

Problem was - no one was interested in Otis' invention.

They just didn't think it was possible.

Otis had an idea though...

He took out an ad in the New York papers saying there would be a shocking magic trick in the park that afternoon and invited people to attend.

Hundreds of people turned up to see Otis stood on a plank high in the air.

The plank supported by two large beams either side and tied to the beams via ropes.

He then explained to the crowd that he had an invention that would transform New York...

Talked about the problem with elevators falling and how that limited how high buildings could grow...

And then...

...he cut one rope...

...and the crowd gasped...

...and then he cut the other rope...

...and the crowd SCREAMED...

...because now nothing was holding the plank up!

It slid down the beams...

...and then STOPPED.

Otis had just shown people undeniable evidence of how his invention works.

Guess what happened next?

Yep - his invention was taken on board and every elevator now had one installed.

And buildings could now be built much higher.

So why do I share this story with you?

Because it illustrates the power of DEMONSTRATION.

You can talk about how great something is...

...but it's much easier for someone to grasp it if you demonstrate it and give them an experience of it.

This is why I tell coaches to give clients a no cost coaching session - so they can experience the power of coaching.

Just like the crowd wowed by Otis' invention...

...your client will know the value of coaching because of the demonstration of it (rather than just a description of it)...

...and want more!

Whereas if you try to just describe coaching to someone you might face the same uphill struggle Otis did.
